BOX SCORE (PDF)

NEWARK, Del. –  Despite cutting the lead to one run mid-way through the contest, the Northeastern Huskies (27-27-1, 9-14 CAA) fell to the Delaware Blue Hens (25-25, 8-14 CAA) by a score of 5-4 on Friday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.

  • Six of the first nine Northeastern batters reached base via walk or hit-by-pitch, but the Huskies were unable to convert on the free passes.
  • The Blue Hens plated a run in the first on an RBI groundout, two in the second on an RBI single, and one in the third on a solo home run to lead early, 4-0.
  • The Husky bats woke up in the fifth with two runs on two hits – Luke Masiuk led off the inning on a walk, and was advanced to second on a throwing error and fielders' choice to Spenser Smith.
  • With two runners on and no outs, Jeff Costello singled up the middle on a full count, scoring Masiuk from second. Two batters later JP Olson hit a single through the left side to score Smith, cutting the Delaware lead in half.
  • Delaware answered with one run in the bottom of the frame to make it 5-2.
  • Notheastern once again cut the lead down in the sixth – back to back doubles from Masiuk and Smith scored Northeastern's third run, and an RBI single by Costello through the left side scored Smith to cut the lead to one at 5-4.
  • The Huskies placed runners in scoring position with two outs in both the seventh and eighth innings with a chance to tie things up, but Delaware got out of the jam in both frames.
  • Cam Schlittler (L, 4-8) got the start for the Huskies and worked 5.0 innings. He allowed six hits and five runs while striking out four.
  • Owen Langan entered the game in the sixth and kept the Blue Hens off the scoreboard to end the contest – he worked the final 3.0 innings with one hit and one walk, but no runs allowed. He retired one batter via the strikeout.

The two teams wrap up the series Saturday, May 21st at Bob Hannah Stadium. Saturday's contest will be the final game of the regular season for both teams and will decide which of the two programs punches the final ticket into the CAA Tournament. First pitch is scheduled for 1pm on FloBaseball.
