NEWARK, Del. – In a win-or-go home battle for both teams, Northeastern baseball (28-27-1, 10-14 CAA) took down Delaware (26-25, 8-15 CAA) by a score of 8-1 on Saturday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Â
The win snapped a six-game CAA losing skid for the Huskies and clinched their ninth straight CAA Tournament berth.
Â
- The Blue Hens tallied the first run of the game on a ground-out RBI to lead 1-0, but the pitching staff of Northeastern held strong and didn't allow another run the rest of the game.
- The Huskies needed just two pitchers to get the victory in the regular season finale – starter Eric Yost (ND) worked six innings, tying his longest career outing, allowing one unearned run on just three hits and three walks. He struck out seven batters on the day, which also ties his career high set earlier this season.
- In relief, Jordy Allard (W, 4-2) went the final 3.0 innings allowing two hits, but no runs or walks, as he and Yost kept the Blue Hens off the scoreboard long enough for the Huskies to make an impact offensively. Allard recorded four punch-outs, putting Northeastern's total to 11 strikeouts on the day.
- Northeastern answered back in the top of the fifth after a leadoff double by Luke Beckstein and a sacrifice bunt by Justin Bosland to send him to third.
- Danny Crossen lifted a ball over the right-fielder to the wall for a double and Beckstein ran home from third to tie the game at 1-1.
- The Husky bats exploded for seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to take a commanding 8-1 lead. The inning began with lead-off walk to Luke Masiuk, and a sacrifice bunt error that allowed Spenser Smith to reach first base.
- With runners on first and second, Jeff Costello hit a deep double to right-center field scoring both Masiuk and Smith to take a 3-1 lead.
- An infield hit by Bosland was bobbled with the bases loaded, and allowed him to reach on the error and allowed Costello to score from third to make it 4-1 - a fly-out RBI by Danny Crossen scored Corey DiLoreto from third to make it 5-1.
- Third baseman Buddy Mrowka hammered a 1-2 count over the left-center field wall to score Bosland and Luke Beckstein to cap off the scoring for Northeastern. It was Mrowka's first home run as a Husky, and the second of his career.
- Costello's RBI gave Northeastern its first and only lead of the weekend.
- The win was just Northeastern's sixth win of the season when its opponent scored first (6-16).
Â
With the win, the Huskies clinched the final CAA Tournament spot, and jumped up one spot to clinch the #5 seed. Northeastern will appear in its ninth straight CAA tournament, the second-longest active streak in the conference. It's the seventh straight tourney berth in the
Mike Glavine era.
Â
The Huskies will face #4-seeded William & Mary in the first round of the CAA Tournament this Wednesday, May 25 – game time TBA.
