ELON, N.C. – In the opening game of the 2022 CAA Tournament, #5 Northeastern (29-27-1), took down #4 William & Mary (26-22) by a score of 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Latham Park.
Â
Northeastern responded to an early William & Mary lead with a two-run home run by
Danny Crossen in the fourth, and the Huskies' pitching staff settled in to keep the Tribe from rallying.
- The Tribe got on the board first with a two-run bottom of the second inning, scoring on an RBI double and RBI ground-out.
- Northeastern cut the lead in half in the top of the third – a two-out JP Olson RBI double scored Jeff Costello to make it a one-run game.
- After Justin Bosland singled to right field in the fourth, Danny Crossen stepped up to the plate and blasted a shot over the center field wall and off the flag pole to take the lead 3-2. It was Crossen's second homer of the season.
- After allowing the two early runs, starter Wyatt Scotti (W, 8-3) settled in and pitched 7.0 innings with only three hits and one walk, fanning one. After the two-run second inning, Scotti allowed just one hit the rest of his outing.
- Owen Langan took over on the bump in the eighth inning and held the Tribe to no hits, no walks, and no runs while striking out the middle batter of his inning.
- In a save situation, Jordy Allard took the mound in the bottom of the ninth and delivered his first save of the season after inducing a fly out, a ground out, and a swinging strikeout to end the game.
- The win marks the Huskies' second straight win, and seventh of the season, when their opponents tally the first run of the game (7-16).
- Northeastern came into the 2022 tournament 0-6 when playing game one of the tournament (now 1-6).
The Huskies will wait to find out their next opponent for Thursday's action – the lowest remaining seed between NU, Hofstra, and Elon will face #1 seed Charleston at 3pm, and the highest remaining seed takes on #2 UNCW at 7pm. All games in the CAA Tournament are streamed on FloBaseball.
