Huskies Take Down Charleston, Advance to CAA Championship

BOX SCORE (PDF)

ELON, N.C. – After falling in the semifinals to Hofstra, the Northeastern baseball team (31-28-1), defeated the College of Charleston (37-19) by a score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Latham Park.

It marks the second straight victory for the fifth-seeded Huskies against the top-seeded Cougars of Charleston in this tournament, after Charleston took all three regular season games in the series.
  • The Huskies jumped out to a big early lead in the second inning on a bases-loaded, bases-clearing, two-out double from Jeff Costello, giving Northeastern a 3-0 lead.
  • The next batter was Corey DiLoreto and he hammered one out of center field for his third of the season to give the Huskies a 5-0 lead.
  • Northeastern's starter Sebastian Keane (W, 5-5) worked 5.0 innings allowing seven hits, but only three runs to show for it, as he kept the Cougars off the board until the fifth inning.
  • In the top of the fifth, catcher Teddy Beaudet rifled a single into center field, scoring Buddy Mrowka and Justin Bosland to extend the lead to 6-0.
  • The Cougars would chip away at the lead in the fifth with a 2-RBI single to center, and in the sixth with a solo shot over the left field wall to make it 6-3.
  • The first eight runs of the game were scored with two outs.
  • Relief pitcher Michael Gemma took over for Keane in the sixth inning and got out of the inning without allowing a run, inheriting one runner on first with no outs. He went 3.1 innings with no hits or runs allowed, with three walks and a strikeout.
  • Thomas Balboni took the mound with two outs in the ninth and induced a fly out to Justin Bosland in center and a foul out to Buddy Mrowka on the third base side to clinch the 6-3 victory. Balboni earned his seventh save of the season.
  • The Huskies are now 16-9 in elimination games in the CAA Tournament.
  • Northeastern improves its CAA Tournament record to 3-2 against the one-seed.

For the second straight season, the Huskies will advance to the championship round from the lower bracket, needing two wins to clinch a title. They face #3 Hofstra starting Sunday morning at 11am on FloBaseball.
