ELON, N.C. - Graduate student JaMiya Braxton scored 19 of her career-high 21 points in the first half as the Northeastern women's basketball team (8-8, 3-2 CAA) used a 45 point first 20 minutes to race past host Elon (4-13, 0-6 CAA), 69-51, on Sunday at the Schar Center.
Junior Derin Erdogan and freshman Ariana Webb also tallied double-digits for the Huskies. Erdogan had 11 points, five rebounds, and dished out two assists. Webb notched 10 points, five rebounds, and two assists.
- Both teams traded buckets to start, with Northeastern leading 5-4 at the 7:47 mark after a layup by Erdogan.
- The Huskies then proceeded to go on an 8-0 run highlighted by Braxton to give Northeastern a 13-6 lead midway through the quarter.
- Braxton continued her torrid pace a few minutes later with back-to-back threes to extend the lead to 19-10 at the 2:30 mark.
- An Erdogan three put the Huskies up at the 1:47 mark, and Northeastern didn't look back, shooting 50% (9-of-18), and took a 24-15 lead into the second.
- Northeastern continued its hot shooting in the second, outscoring the Phoenix 9-2 to the midway point of the quarter.
- Freshman Marian Turnbull tallied a three with 4:41 to go to put Northeastern up 36-19, and the Huskies used a 21-6 second quarter to take a commanding 45-21 lead into halftime.
- Northeastern shot 52.9% (18-of-34) in the first half, and was 8-of-18 from long range.
- Elon started off the third strong with a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to 45-26.
- Northeastern was held without a field goal until the 5:06 mark, when Erdogan tallied a layup off a steal from senior Jaelyn Batts.
- Batts added to the Northeastern lead later in the frame with a layup to increase the advantage to 50-30, and the Huskies kept a commanding lead into the fourth.
- Both teams traded buckets in the final stanza, but the Huskies remained in front. Elon tallied a 5-0 run in the final few minutes, but back-to-back buckets from junior Izzy Larsen and junior Deja Bristol extended Northeastern lead, and ultimately sealed the win.
The Huskies will remain on the road, and head to Hofstra on Sunday, January 22. Tip-off is slated for 2 pm, and can be watched on FloHoops.
