BOSTON – Despite
Chris Doherty's second double-double in the last three games, No. 18/21 College of Charleston (21-1, 9-0) used a big run in each half to run away from the Northeastern men's basketball team (8-11, 4-4) in front of 1437 at Matthews Arena, 87-61.
Â
With the Huskies within two points following a
Coleman Stucke three pointer with 7:14 remaining in the first half, Charleston responded with a 19-3 run to take a commanding lead that it would not relinquish.
Â
Doherty finished the day with 11 points and 13 rebounds as one of two Huskies in double-figures. He was joined by
Jared Turner with 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting (3-of-6 from three) for a Northeastern team that finished the day 25-of-70 from the field and 8-of-28 from long range.
Â
Charleston, meanwhile, put three players in double figures led by Ben Burnham's 15 points. Pat Robinson (14 points) and Ryan Larson (12 points) both reached double digits, while the Cougars scored 44 points in the paint en route to a 34-of-72 overall (47%) and 9-of-25 from three.
Â
• The Huskies hung tough for most of the opening half, with Northeastern cutting an early 10-point deficit down to down 7:14 left until the break before Charleston used a 19-3 lead over six minutes to take a 16-point lead into halftime, 42-26.
Â
•
Joe Pridgen, Stucke and
Jahmyl Telfort had six points apiece for the Huskies in the opening half, while Doherty hauled in nine of the team's 16 total rebounds in the half. NU was 30% from the floor (9-of-30) and 5-of-15 from deep.
Â
• Charleston then got Doherty and Pridgen in foul trouble, and used the large run to take control of the game. The Cougars were 16-of-34 overall and 5-of-12 from deep in the first, led by nine points from Larson.
Â
• The Cougars continued the pressure into the second half, using a 12-2 run over three minutes to put the game out of reach.
Â
The Huskies will head on the road for a pair next weekend, beginning on Thursday at Towson (7 p.m.)
