Huskies Hold Off Monmouth in Thriller, 75-70

BOX SCORE (PDF)

BOSTON - Graduate student JaMiya Braxton hit a late tie-breaking jumper, and junior Deja Bristol had a critical offensive putback with 13 seconds left as the Northeastern women's basketball team (10-9, 5-3 CAA) won a thrilling CAA contest over visiting Monmouth (10-11, 5-5 CAA), 75-70, on Sunday afternoon at the Cabot Center.

Braxton's jumper broke a 64-64 tie with just over three minutes to go, and gave the Huskies the lead for good. With 16 seconds left, and NU clinging to a 71-70 lead, junior Derin Erdogan's jumper to beat the shot clock hit the front of the rim and bounced out, but Bristol pulled down the rebound between four Hawks and put it back in to push the lead to 73-70.

After a timeout, the Huskies played stifling defense on the inbounds play, as Monmouth could not get the ball in and was called for a five second turnover. Sophomore Gemima Motema was subsequently fouled, and hit a pair of free throws with nine seconds left and then she blocked a last chance layup from Monmouth to secure the win.

Motema led Northeastern with 19 points, while Braxton (14 points), Erdogan (11 points) and freshman Ariana Webb (11 points) also reached double-figures in scoring. Webb went 4-for-4 from the field, including 3-for-3 from the three-point range.
  • The visitors got off to a quick 8-0 lead, but the Huskies responded right back with a 7-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back layups by junior Halle Idowu. After the teams went back and forth for most of the opening frame, Webb capped off a 9-0 run for Northeastern with a three-pointer to lead 16-12 at the 2:02 mark. The Huskies continued to remain in front, with a 16-14 lead after one.
  • Monmouth had an early 7-0 run in the second, to extend its advantage to 21-18 at the 8:10 mark. The teams went back and forth for most of the frame, with neither leading by more than six.
  • Braxton tallied a layup and three at the 5:01 mark to give Northeastern a 30-28 lead, but Monmouth immediately knotted the contest back up at 30.
  • The Hawks were strong from long range shooting 75% (3-of-4) in the frame, and the visitors led 39-34 at halftime.
  • In the third, Motema got the Huskies within striking distance right away after back-to-back baskets to trim the deficit to 39-38 at the 8:48 mark.
  • Northeastern's offense was stellar in the stanza, as the Huskies went on a dominant 11-0 run a few minutes later, capped off by a jumper from junior Jaelyn Batts and a three by Webb to take a 49-41 lead.
  • The visitors continued to fight back though, as Monmouth went on a 6-0 run in the final two minutes of the quarter to cut Northeastern's advantage to 53-52 heading into the
  • fourth.
  • Each team traded baskets in the early minutes of the fourth, with neither leading by more than one. Webb tallied another three at the 6:02 mark to give the Huskies a 60-56 lead, but the Hawks responded right back.
  • Northeastern held onto a slim 69-68 advantage down the stretch, and didn't look back after Bristol's clutch basket and crucial free throws in the final seconds of play.
The Huskies conclude their three-game home stand on Friday, February 3 against Drexel. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm, and can be watched on FloHoops.
