WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Northeastern men's basketball team (5-9, 1-2) received 18 points from
Coleman Stucke and brought an 11-point second half deficit down to one with 5:08 left, but ran out of time against William & Mary (6-9, 1-1) on Thursday at Kaplan Arena, 69-66.
Â
Down by double digits with 14:27 remaining in regulation, Northeastern dug in as
Joe Pridgen scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to lead the Huskies on the comeback trail. NU was 9-of-15 down the stretch to bring it within a point late before a pair of Tribe free throws forced a contested Northeastern three in the final seconds that would not fall.
Â
NU shot 50% for the second time in the last three games, finishing the night 28-of-56 from the floor and 7-of-19 from deep. Stucke finished the night 7-of-13 (4-of-7 from three) and had a career-high nine rebounds while
Chris Doherty added eight points, all in the second half, and a team-high five assists.
Â
The Tribe rebounded from a 12-of-32 first half to finish 25-of-56 (45%) overall and 6-of-16 from deep, receiving 16 points from Anders Nelson to lead three players in double figures.
Â
• The Huskies shot the ball well to open the game, going 13-of-26 in the first half including a 12-of-19 start to the game that had Northeastern leading by as many as seven, but a 13-3 run over the final 6:27 gave the Tribe a three-point cushion at the break, 34-31.
Â
• Coleman got things going for Northeastern, going 4-of-6 over the first six minutes for 10 first half points before Cormier got hot down the stretch to head into recess with seven points.
Â
• William & Mary, which led for only 1:33 in the first half, was 12-of-32 from the floor over the opening 20 minutes and received nine points from Dorsey on 3-of-6 from deep.
Â
• A 9-0 William & Mary run over less than two minutes early in the second half ballooned the Tribe lead up to 11, its largest of the night, with 14:27 to play capped by a three from Matteus Case (five points).
Â
• Northeastern went to work from there, using an 8-0 run to chip away at the deficit before making it a one-point game with 5:08 left on a bucket from Doherty.
Â
• That setup a wild finish as the Tribe went back up by seven with 1:24 left before five quick points from Stucke, including a deep three, made it 66-64 William & Mary with 41 seconds left.Â
Â
• After Nelson went 1-of-2 at the line to make it 67-64, a putback layup from Pridgen made it a one-point game with 4.9 seconds to play. The Tribe, though, would hit their free throws down the stretch and forced a deep three from
Jahmyl Telfort in the final seconds to escape with the victory.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when Northeastern takes on Hampton at 4 p.m. on FloHoops.
