ELON, N.C. – Paced by double-digit performances from
Abby Reck and
Anabel Zier, the Northeastern volleyball team (9-5, 5-1 CAA) knocked off the Elon Phoenix (3-12, 0-6 CAA) in four sets on Sunday afternoon at the Schar Center. The Huskies finished the weekend perfect, and have won three straight.
Zier had a stellar day with a career-high 16 kills on .424 hitting, and a career-high nine blocks. Reck also tallied 16 kills on .325 hitting with six blocks.
Maddie Donaphon also had a strong day defensively for the Huskies with a career-high 19 digs.
- Set 1: Elon stormed out to an early 7-1 lead, but the Huskies fought back to trim the deficit. After the Phoenix led 11-7, Northeastern knotted the score up after back-to-back errors by the hosts. Both teams traded points down the stretch, with neither leading by more than one. Elon pulled ahead at 21-17 after four straight points and held on to take the set at 25-20.
- Set 2: The Phoenix got off to a 5-1 lead, but once again, the Huskies continued to chip away at the deficit. Northeastern tallied five of the next six points to knot the frame up at six. Both teams went back and forth until the Huskies pulled ahead at 14-10 after back-to-back kills from Zier. Down the stretch, kills from Reck propelled the Huskies to a 22-13 advantage, and Northeastern took the set at 25-18. The Huskies hit .370 in the frame with Zier leading the way with six kills on .500 hitting.
- Set 3: The Huskies notched a 10-7 advantage to start, and continued to hold onto the lead throughout. Blocks from Zier and Julianna Truscott followed by a kill from Reck gave Northeastern a 17-13 lead, and the advantage extended to 21-15 a few points later after back-to-back kills from Nyla Shepherd. The Huskies won the set at 25-22. Northeastern was strong defensively in the frame with six team blocks compared to Elon's three.
- Set 4: Both teams traded points early on, with Elon tallying a 10-7 advantage. A few points later, the Huskies knotted the frame up at 13 after blocks from Zier and Marika Virthe, followed by back-to-back aces from Inbal Peleg. Two straight kills from Reck extended Northeastern's lead to 19-17, and the Huskies held onto the advantage until the 24th point. Up 24-21, Elon tallied three straight points to hold off match point. A kill by the Phoenix put the hosts ahead at 25-24, but the Huskies responded back with kills from Zier and Jessica Frannea to go in front. Northeastern held on to win the tight set at 27-25.
- Truscott tallied her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs.
- Shepherd chipped in with six blocks.
- Frannea dished out a team-high 34 assists.
- The match featured 19 ties, and eight lead changes.
The Huskies will host Delaware the weekend of October 7-8. First serve is slated for 2 p.m., and will stream on FloVolleyball.
