Huskies Clinch CAA Tournament Berth With 6-2 Win Over Hofstra

DEDHAM, Mass. — Senior forward Sarah Coyle scored two goals, freshman forward Alex Mega scored twice and the Northeastern field hockey team (7-8, 3-2 CAA) put up 29 shots to beat the Hofstra Pride (5-10, 1-4 CAA) 6-2 and clinch a spot in the 2023 CAA Tournament Friday afternoon at Dedham Field.
  • The Huskies will appear in their 14th CAA Tournament, with this being the sixth appearance in the last seven seasons. Northeastern will look for its first-ever CAA Championship in Newark, Delaware from Nov. 3-5.
  • Northeastern got on the board early, as junior midfielder Lara Taylor slotted home a feed from sophomore midfielder Anna-Kate Domingue in the seventh minute of the contest.
  • The Huskies added two more before halftime, both off the stick of Mega. Her first was assisted by Taylor on a feed to the middle, where Mega was able to punch it into the cage at 20:24. Then, just under two minutes later, Mega struck again with another goal, her ninth of the year. That leads the Huskies and is tied for third in the CAA.
  • Hofstra scored just 22 seconds later and had a goal in the third period, but a rebound off a corner kicked out to Coyle on the back post of the cage, where she scored with a shot over the goaltender for her first goal of the game with 23 seconds to play in the third quarter. Coyle picked up another rebound in the fourth and scored, getting her fifth goal of the season.
  • The final goal for Northeastern was off a corner, as senior forward Mak Graves tipped home a rocket from graduate student Lauren Rowe, giving Rowe her eighth assist to tie her for the CAA lead and Graves her sixth goal and third this week.
  • The 29 shots on goal are the most for the Huskies in over a decade.
Up next, the Huskies travel to Orono, Maine for a matchup with the Black Bears Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. That contest can be streamed live on ESPN+.
