Huskies Defeat Stonehill, 73-61, For Edwards-Lloyd’s First Career Victory

NORTH EASTON, Mass. – Paced by 22 points from Gemima Motema, the Northeastern women's basketball team (1-0), took down Stonehill (0-1), on Monday night at Merkert Gymnasium.
 
Motema was stellar, tying a career-high in points on 9-of-18 shooting with six rebounds. The Huskies also had double-digit performances from Deja Bristol with 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, and Derin Erdogan with 13 points and a team-high five assists.
  • The Huskies got off to a quick start in the first with a 10-4 advantage, capped off by back-to-back buckets by Motema.
  • The Skyhawks responded back with a three to trim the deficit to 12-9 at the 5:54 mark, but a layup by Bristol extended the advantage to 14-9.
  • Up 14-11 with 5:53 to go in the stanza, Motema continued her torrid play with back-to-back layups to give the Huskies an 18-11 lead.
  • The Skyhawks went on an 8-0 run to take the lead at 19-18 with two minutes to go, but Erdogan responded back with a layup to give Northeastern a 20-19 edge heading into the second.
  • The Huskies shot 55.6% (10-of-18) overall in the first, highlighted by Motema's eight points on perfect 4-of-4 shooting.
  • Four straight points by Motema gave the Huskies a 24-21 advantage at the 8:34 mark of the second, but Stonehill quickly cut the deficit down to one with a jumper at 24-23.
  • A few minutes later, the Skyhawks took a 32-30 advantage, but a three by Yirsy Quéliz put the Huskies back in front at 33-32.
  • The Huskies shot 60% overall (9-of-15) in the frame and took a 39-34 lead into halftime.
  • Quéliz tallied another three at the 7:45 mark of the third to give the Huskies a 43-37 advantage.
  • Northeastern continued to remain ahead (50-41) after a layup by Asha Parker and a three by Erdogan.
  • The Huskies took a 53-49 advantage into the final frame.
  • Northeastern tallied its biggest lead of the night at 13, leading 64-51 after an and-one play from Bristol.
  • The Skyhawks trimmed the deficit to five (64-59) with 3:15 to go, but Bristol responded back with a layup to put the game back out of reach for good.
  • The Huskies edged Stonehill in paint points (40-24).
Northeastern will host UMass in its home opener on Thursday, November 9. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. and will stream on FloHoops/NESN+.
