BOSTON – Junior forward
Asha Parker scored a career-high 18 points as the Northeastern women's basketball team (2-0), took down the UMass Minutewomen (1-1), 78-74, in its home opener on Thursday evening at the Cabot Center.
Parker was stellar for Northeastern, tallying 10 of her points in the second half, and was 6-of-10 from the floor. The Huskies also had double-digit performances from junior guard
Gemima Motema with 16 points and senior guard
Maddie Vizza with 12 points, nine of which came from beyond the arc.
The Huskies shot 51% (25-of-49) overall, and capitalized off 26 fouls by the Minutewomen, leading to 24 points from the charity stripe.
- The Minutewomen got off to a quick 5-0 advantage in the first, but senior guard Derin Erdogan responded back with a three to trim the deficit.
- Vizza propelled the Huskies to their first lead of the night at 11-10 after back-to-back threes at the 5:32 mark.
- Both teams traded baskets down the stretch of the frame, with neither leading by more than two.
- Parker notched a layup with 27 seconds to go, but UMass responded right back to knot the game up at 21 heading into the second.
- After the two teams went back and forth to start the second, freshman guard Yirsy Quéliz put the Huskies ahead at 30-27 with a layup at the 6:57 mark.
- The Huskies continued to extend their advantage after back-to-back baskets by sophomore forward Oralye Kiefer to lead 36-32.
- Erdogan tallied a layup with 18 seconds to go to give Northeastern a 42-36 lead at halftime.
- Parker got the Huskies started in the third, notching back-to-back layups to extend the advantage to 46-41.
- A layup by senior forward Deja Bristol gave Northeastern its first double digit lead at 54-44, and Motema followed up with an and one play to give the Huskies its largest advantage of the night at 57-44.
- UMass tallied a three with 29 seconds left, but the Huskies took a 59-50 advantage into the fourth.
- The Minutewomen tallied a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 61-57 with 6:59 to go, but that was the closest the visitors would get.
- The Huskies tallied 13 points from the free throw line in the fourth to secure the win.
- Northeastern notched 38 points in the paint compared to 16 for UMass.
The Huskies will hit the road to face Boston College on Sunday, November 12. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. and will stream on ACCNX.
