BOSTON – Derin Erdogan tallied a team-high 21 points, but the Boston University Terriers (8-3) notched a three-pointer with one second to go to take down the Northeastern women's basketball team (4-6), 83-80, in an overtime thriller on Friday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
In a contest that had six ties and 10 lead changes, the Huskies and Terriers went back and forth, ending regulation knotted up at 71. In overtime, Erdogan was stellar for Northeastern, tallying seven straight points to give the Huskies an 80-78 lead with 33 seconds remaining. BU responded to knot the game up, and sealed the win with the three-pointer.
Erdogan reached 20+ points for the second time this season, and second in the last three games. The Istanbul, Turkey native also had five rebounds, five assists, and tied a season-high with four steals.
Deja Bristol also headlined the Huskies with 14 points and six rebounds.
Boston University shot 51.7% as a team, and were led by Caitlin Weimar with a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds.
Erdogan led the way with 10 points on 4-of-6 shooting and three assists as the Huskies scored 12 of their 25 points off BU turnovers in the first. Bristol also chipped in with six points to propel Northeastern to a 15-point advantage (25-10), heading into the second.
Bristol continued to be strong in the second, giving Northeastern its largest lead of the contest at 17 (27-10), to open the frame. The Huskies led by double-digits for the majority of the stanza, until the Terriers notched a three with 2:46 to go to trim the deficit to 39-30. Both teams went back and forth, and the layup by Bristol gave Northeastern a 45-37 lead at halftime.
Boston University came out firing in the third, tallying five straight points to trim the deficit to 49-42 at the 7:26 mark. The Terriers continued to push the pace a minute later with an 8-0 run to cut the Husky advantage to two at 52-50. The Terriers outscored Northeastern 19-10 in the frame, and took a 56-55 lead into the fourth.
Both teams traded points in the fourth, with neither leading by more than three. With 4:46 to go,
Asha Parker stole the ball and put Northeastern up 63-62 after a layup.
Yirsy Quéliz then followed up with a layup of her own to extend the lead to three (65-62). The Terriers continued to respond back down the stretch, capped off by a game-tying layup with 27 seconds to go in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The Terriers outscored the Huskies 7-2 to start overtime, extending their lead to 78-73. Erdogan responded with her seven straight points to give Northeastern the advantage at 80-78 with 33 seconds to go, but BU knotted the score up at 80 with a jumper, which was followed up by the game winning shot from beyond the arc.
The Huskies will open CAA play at home against Delaware on January 5. Tip-off from the Cabot Center is set for 7 p.m. on NESN+/FloHoops.
