BOSTON – Derin Erdogan notched a career-high 32 points, but it wasn't enough as the Northeastern women's basketball team (4-7, 0-1 CAA) fell to the Delaware Blue Hens (5-8, 1-0 CAA) in its CAA opener on Friday night at the Cabot Center.
Erdogan was dominant in the contest, tallying 21 of her points in the second half, and finished 11-of-19 from the field. The senior reached 20+ points for the third time this season, and third in the last four games. The Istanbul, Turkey native also had a team-high six rebounds, two assists, and seven steals. The Huskies also had double-digit performances from
Deja Bristol with 13 points, and
Yirsy Quéliz with a career-high 10 points.
Delaware shot 43.9% overall in the contest, but dominated the Huskies in bench points with 37 points compared to nine for Northeastern. Chloe Wilson paced the Blue Hens with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Erdogan got Huskies going in the first, making two of her first three field goals to give Northeastern a 6-4 advantage at the 4:57 mark. Delaware though, pulled ahead on a 6-0 run down the stretch, and ultimately took a 18-15 lead into the second.
Delaware came out firing in the second, making four of its first five field goals to balloon its lead to 27-16 at the 7:49 mark. The Huskies though, fought back to close the gap to 33-28 after Delaware got into foul trouble. Northeastern continued to push the pace as a layup by Bristol and a three by Queliz cut the deficit to 35-33 going into halftime.
The Blue Hens started off the third on a 5-0 run to lead 40-33 at the 8:46 mark. A jumper by Erdogan and a three by
Maddie Vizza trimmed the deficit back down to two (40-38). Both teams traded baskets for the majority of the frame, but Delaware took a 57-52 advantage into the fourth.
Erdogan was unconscious in the fourth quarter with 13 of her points, highlighted by her own 6-0 run to trim the Delaware advantage to 63-61 with 6:44 to go. The Blue Hens though, responded back with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach for good.
The Huskies will head to Drexel to face the Dragons on Sunday, January 7. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m. on FloHoops.
