WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jahmyl Telfort had a team-high 18 points for the Northeastern men's basketball team (8-16, 4-9), but 23 points from Trazarien White and a 28-of-36 night from the free throw line sent UNCW (20-7, 10-4) past the Huskies in front of a sellout crowd at Trask Coliseum, 71-59, on Saturday night.
Â
UNCW never trailed in a game that saw a combined 51 fouls called and 31 turnovers committed, putting three players in double figures. White was joined by Amari Kelly and Shykeim Phillips with 14 each as the Seahawks finished the night 46% from the field.
Â
Telfort led three Huskies in double figures, inching closer to becoming the 41st player in team history to reach 1000 career points. He was joined by
Joe Pridgen (14 points on 6-of-12 shooting) and
Coleman Stucke (10 points on 4-of-6 overall) as Northeastern shot 48% overall and went 14-of-17 from the stripe.
Â
• Northeastern stayed within striking distance for most of the first half despite Telfort and
Chris Doherty being forced to the bench with three fouls apiece. Telfort and Pridgen led the team with six points each for a Northeastern squad that was 8-of-16 from the field.
Â
• UNCW, though, turned 15 Northeastern turnovers into 14 points in the first half to take a 33-20 lead into the break. The Seahawks were 11-of-24 overall and 10-of-15 from the line, using a 10-1 run to close the half.
Â
• Despite UNCW going up by 16 early in the second half, Northeastern wouldn't go away, using a 10-0 run over less than three minutes capped by a three from Stucke to make it 46-40 with 12:47 to go.
Â
• The Seahawks would once again go up by as many as 16 with 6:47 remaining before Northeastern responded with a 7-0 run to make it a three-possession game with 4:20 to play, but UNCW came back with a 6-0 run of its own to get the lead back to double digits late.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Monday night when the Huskies head to No. RV/RV Charleston for a 7 p.m. tip on FloHoops.
