Big Second Quarter Propels Huskies Past Hofstra, 59-52

BOSTON – The Northeastern women's basketball team (14-11, 9-5 CAA) used a big second quarter to knock off visiting Hofstra (9-16, 3-11 CAA), 59-52, on Sunday afternoon at the Cabot Center.
 
Sophomore Gemima Motema paced Northeastern with a team-high 16 points and four steals. Junior Derin Erdogan also tallied double-digits with 10 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Graduate student JaMiya Braxton and junior Deja Bristol chipped in as well for the Huskies with nine points apiece.
  • The Huskies got off to a quick 6-0 lead, after back-to-back layups by Motema, and a bucket by Braxton.
  • Hofstra responded back with four straight to make it a two-point game at the 4:52 mark of the first, but free throws by junior Halle Idowu a minute later put Northeastern up 7-6.
  • Northeastern had a four-point advantage multiple times down the stretch of the opening frame, and eventually took a 19-16 lead into the second.
  • The Huskies got off to a hot start in the second, ballooning their lead up to 11 (27-16), after an 8-0 run capped off by a layup by Motema.
  • Northeastern dominated in the quarter, leading by as many as 13 in the final seconds after another bucket by Motema.
  • The Huskies shot 72.7% (8-of-11) overall, and 50% (1-of-2) to take a 36-23 lead into halftime.
  • Northeastern took a 15-point lead (37-23), its largest of the day in the opening minute of the third, and continued to hold a double-digit advantage until the Pride trimmed the deficit down to nine (42-33) with three minutes to go in the stanza.
  • Erdogan and Motema tallied back-to-back layups to give Northeastern a 46-33 lead heading into the fourth.
  • The teams went punch for punch in the final stanza, but the Huskies continued to remain ahead. Hofstra went on a 7-0 run late to cut Northeastern's lead to six at 55-49, but sophomore Camille Clement tallied a jumper with 54 seconds to put the game back out of reach.
  • Northeastern dominated Hofstra in paint points (32-20), fast break points (22-7), and bench points (22-8).
The Huskies will host Delaware in their Think Pink Game on Friday, February 24. Tip-off is slated for 7 pm, and can be watched on FloHoops.
