BOSTON – After erasing a 14-point deficit to lead by four with 36 seconds remaining, the Northeastern men's basketball team (8-14, 4-7) saw Elon (5-19, 3-8) score the game's final five points to stun the Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena, 74-73.
Â
Following a three-pointer from Jerald Gillens-Butler to make it 73-72 Huskies with 16 seconds to play, the Phoenix forced a turnover on the inbounds pass to get the ball back under the Northeastern basket with 14 seconds left. That setup a go-ahead layup from Gillens-Butler with nine seconds to go before a shot from
Coleman Stucke at the buzzer was blocked by Sam Sherry to give Elon the win.
Â
Chris Doherty led all scorers with 22 points (16 in the first half) on 8-of-11 shooting and a team-high five assists. He was joined in double figures by
Jahmyl Telfort (20 points on 7-of-8) and Stucke (16 points; 4-of-10 from three) for a Huskies team that was 24-of-47 overall and 9-of-13 from three.
Â
Gillens-Butler was one of three Phoenix in double figures with 18 points along with Max Mackinnon (20 points; game-high eight assists) and Sean Halloran (12 points). Elon was 30-of-60 overall and 6-of-25 from three in a game that saw 10 ties and six lead changes.
Â
• Doherty was a workhorse for the Huskies in the opening half, dropping 16 points in 18 minutes on 6-of-7 from the floor to keep Northeastern level through the first 10 minutes of the game. as a team, the Huskies shot 45% (10-of-22) from the field and just 2-of-11 from three, with both long-range conversions coming from
Jared Turner.Â
Â
• Elon, though, would use a 13-2 run over four minutes to take a double-digit lead into the break, 39-28. The Phoenix were 17-of-31 (55%) overall and received 11 first half points from Mackinnon.Â
Â
• Stucke got hot at the start of the second half, spearheading a 12-1 Northeastern run to erase the deficit and give the Huskies their first lead since 11:33 of the first half with 10:54 to play, 56-53.
Â
• Then it was Telfort's time to turn it on, scoring Northeastern's next seven points over the next 2:28 to make it 66-63 Huskies with 4:41 to go.
Â
• It was punch for punch from there before a
Glen McClintock three followed by a pair of free throws by McClintock gave the hosts a two-possession lead with 36 seconds left. But a three from Gillens-Butler followed by another layup after a Northeastern turnover gave Elon the 74-73 lead with nine seconds left before Sherry's block on Stucke at the buzzer.
Â
The Huskies will be back home on Wednesday when Northeastern hosts Hofstra at Matthews Arena. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and the game will be televised nationally on CBSSN.
