BOX SCORE (PDF)

BOSTON – The Northeastern women's basketball team (11-11, 6-5 CAA) hit seven of its final eight shots, and 9-of-13 overall in the final frame as it defeated Stony Brook (13-9, 7-4 CAA), 68-63 on Thursday night at the Cabot Center.

Junior Derin Erdogan scored 10 of her 19 points in the fourth, as sophomore Gemima Motema, who also had 19 points, tallied nine points on 4-of-4 shooting in the fourth.

Senior Jaelyn Batts pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds in the effort and added four assists.
  • After Erdogan made a jumper 45 seconds in to open the scoring, it became a struggle for both teams offensively as it was tied at two over three minutes in.
  • Stony Brook would heat up and take an 8-4 lead with under five minutes to go in the first, but NU would score four in a row to tie.
  • The Seawolves responded with six straight to go up 14-8 with 2:22 left, and would eventually take a 16-12 lead into the second quarter. The Huskies shot 6-of-14 from the floor in the first and held Stony Brook to 8-of 23 shooting overall, including 0-9 shooting from three.
  • Batts beat the shot clock with a shot clock-beating layup to start the second and cut the deficit to 16-14.
  • The Seawolves would finally hit from deep as they drained back-to-back threes to go up 24-16 at the midway point of the quarter.
  • Erdogan would drill the Huskies first three a few minutes later and Motema would get a steal and layup to cut the deficit to 24-21 with 2:21 left.
  • After the teams traded buckets, junior Deja Bristol would get a steal and Motema would get another fast break layup to cut the deficit to 26-25, but SBU immediately hit another three to extend the lead back to four.
  • Bristol would respond with a layup, but the Seawolves beat the buzzer with a lay-up to take a 31-27 lead into the half. Bristol and Motema each had six at the break to lead, while Batts collected a season-high eight rebounds in the first half alone.
  • Northeastern shot 13-of-28 from the field, while holding Stony Brook to 14-of-37 shooting in the first half.
  • Motema and graduate student JaMiya Braxton hit transition layups to tie the game at 31 early in the third, and junior Halle Idowu hit a layup with 7:06 left to give the Huskies their first lead since 2-0.
  • Stony Brook responded with a 6-0 run to go back up 37-33, but Erdogan hit back-to-back shots to tie it back up and force the visitors to call timeout with 3:36 left in the third.
  • Braxton then drained a three and Motema scored in transition to make it a 9-0 run and give NU a game-best five-point lead, 42-37, with just under three minutes to go.
  • SBU scored five-straight to tie it up, but Batts' got her 15th rebound of the game on an offensive board and put it back up to beat the buzzer and give NU a 44-42 lead after three.
  • Erdogan hit a three to open the fourth and then made a floater to make it a game-best seven-point lead, at 49-42, two minutes into the frame.
  • Stony Brook responded with a 5-0 run, that the Huskies matched with four straight of their own. After a three by the visitors cut the NU lead to 53-50, Erdogan got a layup and was fouled. Her free throw gave the hosts a 56-50 lead with 4:19 left.
  • Motema then got back-to-back buckets in transition to put the Huskies up 60-50 with 3:37 remaining.
  • A few minutes later, the Seawolves responded with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to 62-59.
  • Sophomore Asha Parker hit a layup with 33 seconds left to push the lead back to 64-59 and force the visitors to take a timeout.
  • After a Stony Brook three a pair of Northeastern free throws, the Seawolves split a pair of free throws with 1.3 seconds left to cut the deficit to 66-63.
  • Parker would get fouled on the inbounds with 0.7 left and hit both free throws to ultimately seal the win.
  • Northeastern dominated points in the paint (42-28), and capitalized on Stony Brook's miscues with 20 points off turnovers.
The Huskies continue the run of CAA newcomers when they head to Hampton for a 2 pm tip-off on Sunday, February 12.
