Northeastern Wins CAA Opener, 6-2 over Elon

ELON, N.C. – In their first CAA game of the season, the Northeastern Huskies (10-1, 1-0) defeated the Elon Phoenix (7-7, 0-1) by a score of 6-2 on Friday afternoon at Latham Park.

The Huskies extended their winning streak to nine games, having not lost since the first series of the season at UNC Greensboro. Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti (W, 4-0) earned his fourth straight win in as many starts, and Danny Crossen and Gregory Bozzo led the way offensively, batting 3-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively.

  • Elon struck first in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI single up the middle that just got under the gloves of the NU infield, scoring two runs.
  • The Huskies chipped away at the lead in the top of th third with an RBI single from Tyler MacGregor, scoring leadoff hitter Gregory Bozzo to make it 2-1.
  • In the fourth, the Huskies tallied two runs to take the lead – Danny Crossen hit his second leadoff single of the game, followed by a walk to Harrison Feinberg to put two runners on. Both runners successfully pulled off the double steal, putting them both in scoring position.
  • With one out in the inning, Spesner Smith reached on a fielders choice on a blooped grounder in the infield – Crossen ran for home but the throw would sail over his head to the backstop, tying the game at 2-2.
  • With two outs, Bozzo tallied his second straight hit of the ballgame, an RBI single to left field that scored Feinberg, giving Northeastern its first lead of the day, 3-2.
  •  The Huskies tacked on three more insurance runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. A leadoff walk to Alex Lane, followed by Crossen's third straight single, and a walk to Feinberg loaded the bases with no outs.
  • Cam Maldonado stepped up to the plate and hit an RBI single, keeping the bases loaded and giving NU a 4-2 lead.
  • Bozzo continued his day by hitting a tough fly into left field that was bobbled by the outfielder, but it would score Crossen to make it 5-2 and keep the bases loaded.
  • Northeastern went up 6-2 on the next batter as Luke Beckstein hit a deep fly ball for a sacrifice fly RBI, scoring Feinberg from third.
  • The Huskies needed just two pitchers to get the win in the contest – Scotti pitched seven full innings allowing just four hits, two runs, and matched his season-high of six strike outs.
  • Closing out the game was freshman Charlie Walker, who worked 2.0 innings with just one hit, and no runs allowed. He walked two batters, but struck out three, bringing his season total to 17 out of the bullpen in just 10 innings of work.
  • The Huskies extend their winning streak to nine games, and win their CAA opener for the first time since 2021 (8-2 at Hofstra).
  • It was the third straight game the Huskies did not commit an error. Northeastern turned two double plays off of two fly outs in the contest.

The two teams were originally scheduled to finish the series with a game Saturday and a game Sunday, but with weather on Sunday, the two teams will play a double header tomorrow, March 11th, starting at 1 P.M.
