ELON, N.C. – The Northeastern baseball team (10-3, 1-2), had its winning streak snapped by Elon (9-7, 2-1) in a double header sweep for the Phoenix - the Huskies fell in game one 4-3 in extra innings, and game two 2-1.
It's the first double header sweep against Northeastern since the start of the 2022 season, and the first time all season Northeastern has lost back to back games.
Game 1 – NU 3, Elon 4 (10 inn.)
- Northeastern got on the board first when the Huskies loaded the bases in the second inning – they were loaded with two outs on a Harrison Feinberg single, a Carmelo Musacchia single, and Cam Maldonado was hit by a pitch.
- Luke Beckstein stepped into the box and earned a five-pitch walk to send Feinberg home for the first run of the game, 1-0.
- After a two-run homer by the Phoenix in the bottom of the frame, Danny Crossen responded with a solo shot of his own to tie the game at 2-2 in the third inning.
- Teams traded homers again with Elon retaking the lead in the fourth on a homer to center field, and Cam Maldonado in the seventh with a solo shot to left-center.
- On the mound Eric Yost started the contest, giving up three runs on seven hits, striking out one – he was relieved in the sixth by Jake Gigliotti who worked 4.0 allowing no runs on three hits, while racking up five strikeouts.
- Elon attempted to walk it off in the bottom of the ninth, sending the runner on first home on a bobbled ball in the outfield, but a good throw and cut got the runner out at home, sending the game to extras.
- Nick Davis took the mound for the bottom of the 10th, and despite getting two quick outs via a fly out and a swinging strikeout, was walked off by a solo home run to center field. His first decision of the season puts him at 0-1.
- It was the first game of the season where Northeastern hit multiple homers in a game and didn't win the game. It's the first time it's happened since early in the 2021 season in a 5-3 home loss to Boston College.
- Northeastern is now 1-1 in extra-inning games this season.
Game 2 – NU 1, Elon 2
- Elon tallied their runs early on in the game with a leadoff home run in the first, and a solo shot in the fourth to lead 2-0.
- Freshman pitcher Aiven Cabral got his first career start, and despite allowing two runs on six hits, two of which were solo home runs, he had no walks and struck out seven batters, holding Elon to just the two runs to try and give the offense a chance.
- Griffin Young took over in the sixth inning and pitched a perfect final three innings, with no runs, hits, or walks, and three strikeouts.
- With the pitching staff holding Elon to just two runs in the contest, the Husky offense was kept it in the whole game, but were unable to cash in on their 10 hits. Northeastern hit into three double plays in game two, snuffing out several rally chances.
- The Huskies loaded the bases twice in the top of the ninth, and a sacrifice fly was able to score Danny Crossen off the bat of Cam Maldonado, but the Elon was able to shut the door before more runs came across.
- Of NU's 10 hits, all 10 were singles. Friday's win and game two's loss were the first two games of the season where Northeastern did not tally an extra-base hit.
The Huskies return home for their first game at Friedman Diamond this Tuesday, March 14 against Bryant. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. on FloBaseball.
