Northeastern Sweeps Double Header with NC A&T

BROOKLINE, Mass. – In their home opener at Friedman Diamond, the Northeastern Huskies (12-3, 3-2 CAA) swept a double header with the North Carolina A&T Aggies (9-9, 2-3 CAA) by a score of 14-0 in game one, and 9-4 in game two.

The Huskies totaled eight home runs on the day, with seven coming in game one. Northeastern was led in game one first baseman Tyler MacGregor (3-for-3, 2 HR), and three Husky pitchers who combined for NU's second shutout of the season. In game two, it was redshirt freshman Harrison Feinberg, hitting 4-for-5 from the leadoff spot with two doubles and two RBI.

Game 1 – Northeastern 14, NC A&T 0

  • The Huskies tallied seven homers in their game one shutout victory over the Aggies, and they started it early with Tyler MacGregor winning a marathon, 13-pitch at bat with two outs in the opening inning. He hammered the 13th pitch over the right field wall into the outfield stands to lead 1-0.
  • In the second inning, it was rookie Cam Maldonado getting a solo shot over the left center field wall with one out, to lead 2-0.
  • Maldonado's homer got the Huskies flowing in the second, with a follow up single from Gregory Bozzo, and a two-run homer from Luke Beckstein to lead 4-0.
  • The Huskies notched a game-high four runs in the third on a Jimmy Sullivan RBI single, a Spenser Smith RBI single, and a Bozzo ground-out, making it 8-0.
  • MacGregor was at it again in the fifth, hitting another two-out solo shot. He would finish the day a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
  • Danny Crossen and Alex Lane joined the home run parade in the sixth, kicking off another big inning for the Huskies. A solo shot from Crossen and a two-run shot for Lane made it 12-0.
  • In the eighth, pinch-hitting Jack Doyle notched his first career home run, blasting one over the left field wall to make it 13-0.
  • NU's final run came from Luke Masiuk, hitting a sac-fly to right center that scored Matt Brinker.
  • On the mound the Huskies pitched a combined shutout with three different arms – starter Wyatt Scotti (W, 5-0) continued his impressive start to the season earning his fifth straight win in as many starts. He worked 7.0 innings with two hits, no runs, one walk, and five strikeouts.
  • In relief, Brett Dunham and James Quinlivan each got an inning of work, with Dunham allowing one walk, and Quinlivan pitching a perfect top of the ninth with one K to end the game.
  • Northeastern has now shut out two opponents this season, with the first shutout coming in season opener, which finished with a score of 11-0 at UNC Greensboro. Wyatt Scotti was the starting pitcher in both shutouts.
  • The seven home runs in game one is the most this season and the most for the program since at least 2010. The Huskies tallied six homers in a game earlier this season in a double header with Indiana State.

Game 2 – Northeastern 9, NC A&T 4
  • In game two, the Aggies were the first to score, jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single up the middle.
  • MacGregor came to the rescue with his third scoring play of the day, tallying an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, scoring leadoff man Harrison Feinberg to tie it 1-1.
  • After another NC A&T RBI single in the fifth, catcher Matt Brinker hit his first career home run over the left field bullpen, tying the game back up at 2-2.
  • The Huskies posted a crooked number in the bottom of the sixth starting with an RBI sac-fly from shortstop Spenser Smith, scoring Lane from third.
  • A Beckstein RBI came in the sixth when he walked with the bases loaded. He was followed by Feinberg, who tallied an RBI single to push NU's big inning to four runs. The score after six innings was 6-2.
  • After starter Eric Yost was able to work 4.1 innings of two-run baseball, Jake Gigliotti (W, 2-0) entered the game in the fourth and worked up to eighth inning. His total line ended at 3.1 IP, 2 hits, 2 runs, and four K's.
  • Griffin Young (SV, 3) entered the game in the eighth with the score at 6-3, and earned his third save of the season with 1.1 innings of two-hit, no run baseball. Griffin notched one strikeout in his outing.
  • With the lead narrowed to 6-4 in the eighth, the Huskies earned more insurance runs off the bat of Beckstein with an RBI ground out, and Feinberg notching his fourth hit of the day, an RBI double down the left field line, clearing the bags to make it 9-4.
  • Beckstein tallied two RBI in each game of the double header.
The double header sweep was Northeastern's second of the season after winning both games against Indiana State on February 25th. All three doubleheaders the Huskies have played in this season have been sweeps. (2-0 vs. ISU, 0-2 at Elon).

The Huskies and the Aggies will wrap up the series on Saturday, March 17th at 1 p.m. on FloBaseball.
