BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the series finale of their weekend series, the Northeastern Huskies (12-4, 3-3 CAA) fell to the North Carolina A&T Aggies (10-9, 3-3 CAA) by a score of 5-3 on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies were held to just three runs despite leading in hits with 14 – middle of the order hitters
Jimmy Sullivan and
Alex Lane each led with three apiece, with one of Lane's going for a double in the bottom of the ninth. Northeastern was only able to muster one run in the final frame despite loading the bases.
- The Aggies scored first for the second straight game, with an RBI single to left center field to lead 1-0. NC A&T added two more in the third on two RBI singles.
- The Huskies attempted several rallies late in the game, but could only muster one run in the fifth, eighth, and ninth innings each.
- Northeastern cut the lead to 3-1 in the fifth on an RBI fielders choice from Alex Lane, which scored Danny Crossen from third.
- The Aggies regained some ground in the eighth with a two-RBI single that found a gap in the infield, leading 5-1.
- With two on in the eighth, Jack Thorbahn hit an RBI sac-fly deep to center, scoring Mike Sirota from third, cutting into the lead again at 5-2.
- The Huskies attempted one final rally in the ninth with a leadoff walk to Crossen, and a big double from Lane down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position with just one out.
- Sirota tallied a one-out RBI, reaching first due to a throwing error, and scoring Crossen from third.
- After a walk to Cam Maldonado, the bases were loaded with just one out. On the next pitch, Spenser Smith smacked a line drive to the second base gap, but a diving play by the shortstop was able to start a 6-4 double play to end the contest.
- Starting pitcher Aiven Cabral (L, 1-2) worked the opening three innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out one and walked one.
- The pitching staff as a whole held A&T to just five runs on their 13 hits – bullpen outings from Nick Davis (2.0, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 1K) and Patrick Harrington (2.1, 3H, 2R, 1K) kept the lead manageable for the offense, and Jack Beauchesne (1.2, 1H, 1BB, 1K) held the Aggies scoreless to close the game.
- Notheastern falls to .500 (3-3) in conference play, and 3-4 in games played on a Saturday.
The Huskies play the next five games at home, with two midweek games coming early next week. They face #18 Boston College on Tuesday, and Merrimack College on Wednesday. Both games are scheduled for a 3 p.m. start on FloBaseball.
