BOSTON - After having three players make the top eight of the National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) national 1v1 Hearthstone tournament, the Northeastern Hearthstone team placed two players in the grand finals on Sunday afternoon, ensuring a Northeastern player would take home the hardware.
In the final, it was
Ben 'AutomatedButton' Pomeroy against
Ethan 'CritECal' Neal, and in an instant classic, the two Huskies pushed the series to its fifth and final game, with AutomatedButton picking up the final win, and the program's second national title in Hearthstone.
Both AutomatedButton and CritECal finished first in their respective top eight brackets, going 2-0 in Saturday's matches, and ensuring that if they were to meet on Sunday, it would be in the final round. AutomatedButton won 3-2 and 3-1 in his route to the top four, while CritECal took both of his Saturday wins by a score of 3-0.
Northeastern's third entrant into the postseason tournament,
Matthew "RockedYou" Rock had his weekend end early, despite winning the first round of his group B matchup 3-0 against Sevenfold of Oregon. He met CritECal in round two and was forced into the lower bracket, and dropped a rematch with Sevenfold, 3-2.
The 2020 Hearthstone team also took home national hardware in the 3v3 tournament through the 'Hearthstone Collegiate' tournament - this is the program's first individual title.
