BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the second midweek game of a back-to-back set, the Northeastern Huskies (14-4) won their second straight game, taking down the Merrimack Warriors (2-13) by a score of 11-2 at Friedman Diamond on Wednesday afternoon.
Missing some big bats, the Huskies got it done on the ground with 10 stolen bases, with
Justin Bosland leading the way with five in the contest. Stepping up offensively was rookie
Carmelo Musacchia who went 3-for-4 on the afternoon with two RBI, and
Spenser Smith who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and two stolen bases. On the mound,
Brett Dunham ended up with the win in relief, pitching 2.2 of the middle innings, allowing no runs.
- Northeastern tallied the first runs of the game in the second inning, after a double steal from Carmelo Musacchia and Justin Bosland put two runners in scoring position. A sac-fly foul out from Matt Brinker scored Musacchia to make it 1-0, and an RBI ground out from Jack Thorbahn.
- The Warriors responded in the top of the next frame with a leadoff solo shot to left field to cut the lead to one run.
- Spenser Smith was responsible for two runs in the third inning, notching an RBI single with no outs that scored Carmelo Musacchia from second – Smith would then steal second base and third base on separate plays, and ran home on a passed ball to extend the lead to 4-1.
- In the fourth, Thorbahn stepped into the batters box with one out, and hit an RBI double to right center field, scoring Bosland to make it 5-1.
- In the seventh, Danny Crossen extended his hit streak to 17 games, hitting an infield single deep to the short stop. He made it to second on a steal, and was scored by an RBI single from Carmelo Musacchia. The Huskies led 6-1 after seven innings.
- After an RBI ground out to Merrimack in the top of the eighth cut the lead down to 6-2, the Huskies exploded for a five-run bottom of the eighth, putting the game out of reach at 11-2.
- In the eighth, it was an RBI double from Luke Masiuk, an RBI walk for Danny Crossen, a sac-fly from Jack Doyle, and an RBI single by Carmelo Musacchia to finish out the game.
- Justin Bosland is the first Huskies to steal five bags in a game since Charlie McConnell in 2018 - the Huskies edged out Towson in their CAA contest, 2-1. 10 stolen bases in a game is the most for Northeastern since the 2021 season - on March 3, 2021, the Huskies stole ten bases against UMass at Friedman Diamond, defeating the Minutemen by the same scoreline, 11-2.
- The Huskies worked through the bullpen in the contest with eight arms seeing action in the contest. Starter Aiven Cabral worked two innings of perfect baseball with three punch outs to get things rolling.
- Brett Dunham (W, 1-0) eventually took over in the third and went 2.2 innings with one hit, no runs and no walks. He also struck out three batters on the day.
- The back end of the bullpen saw James Quinlivan (1.0, 0H, 0R, 0BB), Jack Beauchesne (1.0, 1H, 1R), and Will Jones (0.2, 1BB, 2K), and season debuts for Hayden Smith (0.1, 1K), and James Morice (1.0, 1H, 1BB).
Northeastern will host the Hartford Hawks this weekend – the series was originally scheduled for a double header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday, but due Saturday's weather forecast, the series will now start on Friday, March 23 with a 2 p.m. start. Saturday's double header will move to Sunday, March 25 starting at 12 p.m. All three games will stream on FloBaseball.
