NU Sweeps Double Header with Hartford

Huskies walk off game one, hold off Hawks in game two.

BROOKLINE, Mass. – In a double header to end their weekend series, the Northeastern Huskies (17-4), swept the Hartford Hawks (1-12) by a score of 10-6 in game one and 3-2 in game two.

Down to their last two outs, the Huskies walked off game one with a grand slam Jack Thorbahn in the bottom of the ninth to come from behind and win game one – in game two, it was the pitchers putting on a show with Aiven Cabral (W, 2-2) going 6.1 innings of two-run baseball, and Griffin Young (SV, 4) finishing out the final 2.2 innings.

GAME 1 – NU 10, HART 6

  • The Huskies got out to an early lead in the third inning on an RBI ground out by Danny Crossen, and a two-run shot over the right field stands by Alex Lane. It was Lane's eighth homer of the season, which leads the team.
  • The NU pitching staff held Hartford scoreless through the first five – Eric Yost worked those five innings, tying his career-high in strikeouts with seven. He allowed just two hits, and one walk.
  • In the sixth, the Hawks were able to break through, plating six runs while only tallying only one run, and capitalizing on two costly NU errors.
  • Hartford was able to keep Northeastern off the bases in dangerous situations, allowing just two hits after going up 6-3.
  • In the ninth, the Husky bats woke up with three straight singles after Luke Beckstein was hit by a pitch. Cam Maldonado notched the first, while Danny Crossen loaded the bases and Alex Lane hit home Beckstein.
  • With one out and the bags juiced, Tyler MacGregor singled up the middle, scoring two more runs to tie the game at 6-6.
  • After Harrison Feinberg was intestinally walked to reload the bases, Jack Thorbahn smashed a 3-1 count into the right field bleachers, ending the game in walk-off fashion for the Huskies.
  • Getting the win on the mound was Patrick Harrington, who took over in the sixth after the Hawks built their lead. He worked 3.1 innings allowing no runs of his own, two hits, and two walks, striking out four. It's his second relief win of the season, and owns a 2-0 record.
  • It was Northeastern's first home walk-off since the Elon series of 2022, also game one of a doubleheader, and it's the first walk-off home run at Friedman Diamond since 2015. The last one came on May 14, 2015, Rob Fonseca hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the 10th to beat #15 Charleston.
  • The win was the Huskies' fourth straight, all coming at home.

GAME 2 – NU 3, HART 2

  • The Huskies were able to strike first once again in game two, with Carmelo Musacchia hitting an RBI double down the left field line to score Harrison Feinberg.
  • Hartford looked to go small ball and manufactured a run on a pair of bunts that moved a runner to third on the first, and scored him on the second bunt, tying the game 1-1.
  • The Huskies answered back with some small ball of their own in the fifth, as Justin Bosland hit a two-out bunt down the left field line, beating out the throw and advancing to second as the ball sailed through first base.
  • Bosland would then go on to score as Spenser Smith hit an RBI single up the middle, retaking the lead.
  • After Smith stole second, Alex Lane hit an infield single which would score Smith as he was off with the pitch, making it 3-1.
  • After the Hawks cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the seventh with one out, Griffin Young entered the game needing two outs and collected a 1-6-3 double play on the second pitch he delivered. Young closed out the final 2.2 innings, with just two hits, no runs, and three K's, picking up his fourth save of the season.
  • It's the third weekend series sweep for the Huskies this season, after sweeping South Florida in Tampa earlier this month, and Indiana State at the Snowbird Classic in February.
  • Northeastern finished the stretch of eight straight road games with a 7-1 record.

The Huskies go back on the road for a midweek match up this Tuesday with Central Connecticut at 3 p.m. They return home Wednesday, March 29 for game with Rhode Island. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m. on FloBaseball and NESN+.
