NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – In a midweek New England matchup, the Northeastern Huskies (18-4) traveled south west and picked up a win against the Central Connecticut Blue Devils (12-4), winning by a score of 5-2 at CCSU Baseball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Northeastern saw strong pitching from the entire staff, with starter
Jake Gigliotti throwing 5.2 strong innings, and relievers
Nick Davis (W, 1-1) and
Griffin Young (SV, 5) supporting him out of the bullpen. Offensively, catcher
Gregory Bozzo notched two RBIs on the afternoon, and
Mike Sirota tallied two doubles and a stolen base, coming in to score both times he reached base.
- Northeastern was able to tally the first runs of the game in the second inning - after Mike Sirota hit a leadoff double, he was advanced to third by Carmelo Musacchia, and both were scored on a Spenser Smith RBI ground out and a Gregory Bozzo RBI single up the middle.
- The Huskies were able to hold CCSU off the scoreboard until the sixth inning as they plated two runs on back to back RBI base hits to tie up the game.
- Stepping back into the batter's box with an even score, Northeastern tallied some offense early in the inning – Gregory Bozzo drew a one-out walk, and was advanced to third on a double down the right field line from Jack Thorbahn.
- Bozzo was scored on a sac-fly from Cam Maldonado, giving the Huskies the lead back at 3-2 with two outs.
- The next batter was Danny Crossen, who extended his hit streak to 20 games with an RBI double down the right field line, scoring Thorbahn to put Northeastern back up by two.
- In the eighth inning the Huskies added one more by way of another Bozzo RBI – he hit a sac-fly to right center field, scoring Mike Sirota from third, who initially reached on a double and subsequently stole third.
- NU starter Jake Gigliotti led the pitching staff with 5.2 innings of work – he kept CCSU scoreless until the sixth inning, with his final line two runs on seven hits and two walks, striking out a career-high seven batters.
- With the game tied, Nick Davis took the mound and shut down the Blue Devils for 1.1 innings – he allowed just one runner to reach, via a walk. The Huskies retook the lead in the seventh, earning Davis his first win of the season.
- Setting up the closer was Brett Dunham, who worked a perfect eighth with two K's.
- Getting the ball in the bottom of the ninth was closer Griffin Young, who notched his fifth save of the season working a perfect inning with one strikeout.
- The Huskies have now won six straight contests, all of them coming in New England. The win snapped a 10-game CCSU win streak, which was good for second-longest active streak in the nation coming into the contest.
- It's the first game of the season where NU and its opponent tallied the same number of hits.
The Huskies return home on Wednesday, March 29
th for a home contest with Rhode Island at Friedman Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 3:05 p.m., streaming on NESN+ and FloBaseball.
