Crossen, Thorbahn Homer in 7-2 Victory over URI

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Returning home for a midweek contest, the Northeastern Huskies (19-4) defeated the Rhode Island Rams (8-12) by a score of 7-2 at Friedman Diamond on Wednesday afternoon.

A pair of career firsts on the mound got the decisions in the scorebook, with sophomore Jack Beauchesne (W, 1-0) earning his first career win and rookie James Morice (SV, 1) earning his first career save. Offensively, the Huskies were led by Danny Crossen, who extended his active hit streak with a two-run home run in the third inning and an RBI single in the sixth. Also in the third inning, Jack Thorbahn hit his second home run in three games to blow the game open on the way to a four-run frame.

  • Rhode Island got out to an early lead as the leadoff man of the second inning took a 3-2 count and sent it to the top of the right field bleachers for a solo home run.
  • The Huskies responded in the bottom of the third, with a pair of two-run homers from Jack Thorbahn and Danny Crossen to take the lead 4-1.
  • Thorbahn's homer was his second of the season, both coming in the last three games. He hit one opposite field to the left field bullpen, and scored leadoff man Harrison Feinberg, who reached on a walk as Northeastern's first baserunner of the game.
  • After Thorbahn's blast to left field, Luke Beckstein reached on a single as he pulled a line drive into left field. With one out in the inning, Danny Crossen extended his hit streak to 21 games with a home run to left field, scoring Beckstein.
  • After the Rams plated one more to cut into the lead with an RBI single in the sixth, Northeastern responded back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the frame.
  • A big RBI triple from Cam Maldonado scored Luke Beckstein from first base, who reached on a walk.
  • Maldonado scored on the very next pitch as Danny Crossen notched his third RBI of the day hitting over the infield that was shifted in.
  • Crossen added a fourth RBI in the eighth, as pinch-runner Justin Bosland stole third and then tagged up on a sacrifice fly to left center field.
  • The Huskies threw a total five pitchers the midweek contest, starting with Hayden Smith getting his first career start – he pitched 2.0 innings, allowing just one run on two hits.
  • Taking over in the third was Jack Beauchesne, who also worked 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit, no runs, and punching out a career high five batters. He earned his first career win as the Huskies took the lead in the bottom of the third inning.
  • Setting up the closer were lefty James Quinlivan (1.0, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 1K) and Brett Dunham (1.0, 2H, 1R, 1K), getting through the fifth and sixth innings.
  • Taking over in the seventh was freshman James Morice in just his second career appearance. Morice had the hot hand, striking out the first two batters he faced, and two more in eighth and ninth innings each for a career-high six K's. Morice ended the game and earned the save, the first of his career.
  • The win streak is now up to seven games for the second time this season – the Huskies' first seven-game streak was stretched to eight back on March 10th against Elon.

The Huskies return to CAA conference play this Friday, March 31st as they travel to West Long Branch, New Jersey to face the Monmouth Hawks for a three game series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. All three games will stream on FloBaseball.
