STONY BROOK, N.Y. – With a tie game through nine innings, the Northeastern Huskies (27-6, 9-4 CAA) pulled out another late win, defeating the Stony Brook Seawolves (12-19, 4-9 CAA) by a score of 8-3 in 10 innings on Friday afternoon at Joe Nathan Field.
Tied 3-3 going into the 10
th, leadoff man
Alex Lane (1-for-4, BB, RBI) delivered the go-ahead run with a solo shot to center field that sparked a five-run inning for Northeastern to take the series opening win. Strong pitching performances by
Wyatt Scotti and
Griffin Young (W, 3-1) allowed just one earned run on the day, keeping the Husky offense within striking distance. Leading the way at the plate was
Mike Sirota (2-for-5, 3B, 2 RBI, 1R),
Spenser Smith (3-for-4, 3B, BB, 2R), and a pair of rookies notching homers,
Carmelo Musacchia (1-for-4, HR, RBI) and
Harrison Feinberg (2-for-4, HR, RBI).
- Northeastern struck first with a solo shot from Carmelo Musacchia, lining one over the left field wall with one out. It was his fourth homer of the season.
- Spenser Smith led off the top of the third inning with a triple, his first of the year, and was driven home by Tyler MacGregor on an RBI ground out.
- Wyatt Scotti and the NU defense held Stony Brook off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, where they tallied their first three hits and run of the game, cutting the lead to 2-1.
- The Huskies responded with another rookie homer in the seventh inning, a home run to left center field by Harrison Feinberg, his sixth of the season, to extend the lead to 3-1.
- Scotti ended his day with seven innings of work, with only one run on four hits, and two punch-outs in his no decision start.
- The Seawolves tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with two runs on two hits and an error, and the game would be sent to extra innings after a scoreless ninth.
- In the top of the 10th, Alex Lane put the Huskies back on top with a solo shot over the center field wall to make it 4-3. It was Lane's 10th of the year, tying him for the team and conference lead.
- The Huskies continued to provide offense in the extra inning when defensive replacement Justin Bosland hit a bunt single to third base with two outs, and made it to third after a failed pick off, a hit by pitch to Gregory Bozzo, and a walk to Spenser Smith.
- Bosland would come in to score from third on a wild pitch to make it 5-3.
- At the top of the order, Mike Sirota hit a bases-clearing triple to score Bozzo and Smith to make it 7-3, and Tyler MacGregor hit home Sirota on a single for the final score of 8-3.
- In relief, Griffin Young finished the game out with just three hits and two unearned runs to his name, striking out two batters, earning the win in extra innings.
- Northeastern is now 2-1 in extra-inning games this season. Two of those three games ended in the 10th inning.
- The Huskies are now 8-1 in series openers this season.
The two teams meet again for game two Saturday, April 15
th. The game time has been moved up to noon to avoid weather later in the day.
