ROOKLINE, Mass. – In a Friday afternoon double header, the Northeastern Huskies (34-7, 15-5 CAA) took both games from the Towson Tigers (13-30, 3-17 CAA), winning game one 6-5, and game two 12-8 at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies got out to early leads in both games and were able to retake the lead in game one, and hold on to the lead in game two.
Mike Sirota led the way with three home runs on the day, including two in game two. He hit one in the eighth inning of each game, to take the lead in game one and extend the lead in game two.
Pitching decisions went to
Patrick Harrington (4-0) in game one and
Eric Yost (5-0) in game two.
Griffin Young picked up his seventh save of the season in game one.
GM 1 – Towson 5, Northeastern 6
- Northeastern got out to an early lead in the first inning on a fly out to center where the ball was dropped on the transfer to throw, allowing Danny Crossen to score all the way from second base.
- The next batter, Cam Maldonado, hit a two-run homer to left field to lead 3-0.
- A pair of sacrifice bunts from Gregory Bozzo and Luke Beckstein allowed leadoff man Spenser Smith to score from third, after he reached on a walk and stole second.
- Down by four runs, the Tigers rallied in the fifth with an RBI single and a three-run homer to tie it up 4-4.
- The Huskies jumped back out in front in the seventh – with two outs, Luke Beckstein worked a count full and singled to left field to keep the inning alive. The next batter, Mike Sirota, homered to left field to retake the lead, 6-4.
- The six runs were enough to capture the win, with Patrick Harrington earning his fourth relief win of the season. He took over in the fifth inning, working 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits.
- Harrington relieved the starter, Aiven Cabral, who looked solid through the opening four innings – he finished the day with 4.1 innings, four runs allowed on seven hits, two walks, and six punch outs.
- Out of the bullpen up by two came Griffin Young, who worked the final 2.0 innings. He allowed just one run on two hits, walking one and striking out three. He earned his seventh save of the season.
- The one run allowed by Young came in the top of the ninth, but he worked himself out of the inning with a fly out and a ground out, halting the offense.
GM 2 – Towson 8, Northeastern 12
- The Huskies once again hopped on the scoreboard early with a four-run first inning. The first four batters of the game all recorded base hits, with Sirota and Tyler MacGregor reaching base and Danny Crossen hitting them in with an RBI double.
- Cam Maldonado followed that up with a single, advancing Crossen to third, and an infield ground out from Jimmy Sullivan scored the third run.
- The next batter, Alex Lane, hit an RBI double to left center to score the fourth run in Maldonado.
- NU grabbed two more in the second inning on another two-run blast from Mike Sirota, once against scoring Luke Beckstein, to make it 6-0.
- An RBI ground out by Towson cut into the lead in the top of the third, and a Beckstein RBI single put the Huskies up 7-1.
- Towson attempted another rally in the seventh, with a two-run home run to left field, ending the day for Eric Yost. He finished the day at 6.1 innings pitched, allowing thee runs on eight hits, one walk, and two punch outs.
- Northeastern put those two runs back into the lead in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases and scoring on a hit-by-pitch to Alex Lane, and an RBI ground out by Spenser Smith.
- The Tigers got a big eighth inning on two homers and an RBI fielder's choice, cutting the lead down to one run.
- Needing insurance in the eighth, the Huskies got it once again from Sirota, who hit his second home run of the game, his third of the day, once again scoring Luke Beckstein from first, to lead 11-8.
- The final run came from Gregory Bozzo, who entered game two late as a defensive replacement – he hit an RBI single over the infield, scoring Maldonado from second.
- Finishing the game for the Huskies on the mound was Jake Gigliotti, who pitched a scoreless ninth inning with only two hits allowed.
Northeastern improves to 16-3 at Friedman Diamond, and extend their active winning streak to seven straight games.
The two teams meet for the series finale on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m. at Friedman Diamond. The Huskies will host their senior day ceremony prior to the game.
