MacGregor Homers Twice in Beanpot Loss to Harvard

BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the semifinals of the 32nd Baseball Beanpot, the Northeastern Huskies (22-5) fell to the Harvard Crimson (8-16) by a score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.

The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Huskies, which was the second-longest active streak in the NCAA at the time. The Huskies lost despite a two-homer day from first baseman Tyler MacGregor, one of which came in the bottom of the eighth inning to retake the lead. It was his seventh and eighth homers of the season.

  • The Huskies struck first with a two-out, two-run homer from Tyler MacGregor to lead 2-0. He scored Danny Crossen hit started his day with a double.
  • The Crimson were able to cut into the lead in the fourth on a solo shot to left field.
  • In the sixth, Harvard was able to tie the game up with a sacrifice fly, scoring a runner from third to knot it up at 2-2.
  • Northeastern starter Jake Gigliotti had another solid midweek outing, allowing just one run in four innings of work on one hit. He walked no batters and struck out five.
  • The Husky bullpen dueled the Crimson and kept them off the scoreboard through in the seventh and eighth innings to keep the offense in it.
  • MacGregor smacked his second homer of the day, this one to right center field, in the eighth inning with one out, to retake the lead 3-2.
  • In the ninth, the Huskies brought in closer Griffin Young in attempt to get his seventh save of the season, but the Crimson were able to tally two runs on a hit and an error in the frame to take the lead.
  • The Huskies were retired in order in the bottom of the ninth, sealing the one-run victory for Harvard.
  • Young suffers his first loss of the season and is 2-1 on the year. He allowed two runs, one earned, on one hit with one walk and two punch outs.

Northeastern will face the loser of UMass and Boston College in the Baseball Beanpot consolation round next Tuesday, April 11th. The Huskies host four more home games this week, starting with Stonehill on Wednesday, April 5th at 3 p.m. on FloBaseball.
