BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the second game of a back-to-back midweek set, the Northeastern Huskies (23-5) bounced back to earn a Wednesday win, defeating Stonehill (3-20) by a score of 10-0 at Friedman Diamond.
Five pitchers combined for a shutout with
Will Jones (W, 1-0) punching out a career-high seven batters in his three innings of work. In the bottom innings, the Huskies were led by
Tyler MacGregor (2-for-3, HR, 3 RBI),
Cam Maldonado (2-for-2, 2BB, 3B, 3R) and
Sean McGee (2-for-2, 3R, 2BB).
- Northeastern was able to strike first, tallying a run in the first inning. Tyler MacGregor reached base on a walk and advanced to second on a double steal attempt. Cleanup hitter Cam Maldonado hit his third triple of the season, hitting the wall in right center field, scoring MacGregor for the 1-0 lead.
- MacGregor hit his third home run of the midweeks, with an opposite field shot in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 4-0. He scored leadoff hitter Sean McGee, and Danny Crossen, after both singled to reach base.
- Crossen added another run on a sac-fly to right field in the fifth, scoring Sean McGee.
- The Huskies dropped another three innings in the sixth inning, on RBI infield singles from Mike Sirota and Matt Brinker. Sirota made it to third and scored the third run on a wild pitch.
- In the eighth, the Huskies loaded the bases and walked in two runs on an RBI by Jack Doyle on an HBP, and an RBI walk to Luke Masiuk.
- On the mound, the Huskies saw five pitchers on a staff day, starting with Aiven Cabral who pitched the opening inning with one hit and one strikeout.
- Will Jones took the mound for the second, third and fourth innings and had a career outing with no hits, no runs, and just one baserunner allowed on a walk. He punched out a career-high seven batters and earned his first career win.
- Coming in after Jones was Hayden Smith – he went three full innings with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts, which tied his career high.
- Ryan Griffin entered the game in the eighth, making his collegiate debut with a scoreless inning with just one hit allowed.
- Closing the game out in the ninth was James Quinlivan, who struck out the first two batters of the ninth inning and ended the game inducing a fly out to right field.
- The win was the Huskies' 11th game of the season scoring double digit runs, and was the fourth shutout of the season.
The Huskies host their second home CAA series of the season, welcoming in the Delaware Blue Hens for a three game set this Friday through Sunday, April 7-9. All three games will stream on FloBaseball and WRBB 104.9 FM – Friday's game will also be broadcast on NESN.
