BROOKLINE, Mass. – In the opening game of a weekend series, Northeastern (23-6, 6-4 CAA) fell to Delaware (15-14, 6-4 CAA) by a score of 10-3 on Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Northeastern was only able to muster three runs in the opening three innings on eight hits, and were held to three runs on 10 total hits on the day. The Huskies' offense ran through the top of the order, with leadoff man
Mike Sirota (3-for-5, 1 run) leading the way for the Huskies.
- Delaware jumped out to an early first-inning lead with two runs on three hits in the inning.
- The Huskies answered back with two runs on four hits of their own – Mike Sirota led off the game, and beat the shift with a single to right field.
- Sirota advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a base hit from Danny Crossen, and was scored by Tyler MacGregor, who reached on a fielding error.
- The game was tied up when Cam Maldonado hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Crossen from third.
- Northeastern was able to grab a lead in the third on a bases loaded wild pitch, scoring MacGregor from third.
- The Blue Hens took the lead for good in the fourth inning on a two-run homer just inside the right field foul pole.
- After getting three runs in the first three innings, the Huskies were blanked for the remainder of the game, tallying just two hits in the final six innings. The Delaware defense allowed their offense to pull out to large lead scoring in every inning but the seventh.
- It's just the second game this season that Northeastern has allowed double digit runs. The 17 hits were the most allowed by the NU pitching staff this year.
- Northeastern was 7-0 in weekend series openers entering Friday's contest with Delaware – they're now 7-1.
The two teams continue the series on Saturday, April 8
th at 1pm at Friedman Diamond. Saturday's game will be First Responders Day, honoring local EMS, fire department and police department workers. That game will stream on FloBaseball.
