BROOKLINE, Mass. – In game two of their weekend set, the Northeastern Huskies (24-6, 7-4 CAA) shut down the Delaware Blue Hens (15-15, 6-5 CAA) by a score of 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The story of the game was freshman starting pitcher
Aiven Cabral (W, 4-2), who went the distance with a complete game shutout, throwing less than 100 pitches and allowing just four singles on the afternoon. Offensively he was backed up by eight extra-base hits from the Northeastern batters, led by
Cam Maldonado (2-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI) and
Alex Lane (2-for-4, double, RBI). A pair of outfielders also collected triples on the day,
Mike Sirota and
Harrison Feinberg.
- Northeastern needed just one pitcher to get through the game – Cabral posted his first collegiate complete game, blanking Delaware with just four hits, no walks, and seven strike outs on the afternoon.
- The Huskies struck first in game two in the bottom of the opening inning. With two outs, leadoff man Mike Sirota scored from third when Alex Lane hit an RBI double down the first base line.
- The Huskies exploded for six runs in the third inning on six hits, four of which were extra-base hits. Mike Sirota led the inning off with a triple to get it started, his second of the season.
- After a Danny Crossen was hit by a pitch, Sirota was scored from third by Tyler MacGregor on a sac-fly, and both MacGregor and Crossen were scored by an RBI double from Cam Maldonado.
- Maldonado was subsequently scored by an RBI triple from Harrison Feinberg, the first triple of his career. He would also score easily from third as the next batter, Carmelo Musacchia, pulled a double down the left field line.
- Musacchia tallied the final run of the third when he stole third, and the attempted throw to third was high and into the outfield, allowing him to run home.
- The Huskies kept adding runs on top of their lead with one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings, on another RBI extra-base hit from Maldonado, a double scoring Tyler MacGregor, and a Danny Crossen RBI single up the middle. Crossen's hit was his first of the game, giving everyone in the starting batting order a hit in the contest.
- Cabral is the first Husky to throw a complete game shutout since 2021 when Sebastian Keene allowed two hits and struck out nine in a win over UMass Lowell, 2-0.
With the series tied at one game apiece, the two teams wrap up the weekend on Sunday, April 9
th at Friedman Diamond. That game is slated for 1 p.m. on FloBaseball.
