BROOKLINE, Mass. – The Northeastern Huskies (40-11, 19-9 CAA) defeated the College of Charleston Cougars (33-19, 17-11 CAA) in game one of their weekend series by a score of 9-2 on Thursday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies jumped on the scoreboard early and never looked back, scoring four runs in the opening inning and five more in the following three innings. The Huskies got RBIs from seven different batters, with
Danny Crossen (3-for-4, RBI, R),
Mike Sirota (2-for-4, RBI, 2R)
Cam Maldonado (2-for-3, RBI, 2R) and
Tyler MacGregor (2-for-5, HR, RBI) leading the way. The pitching staff needed just three arms to get through the contest, with
Aiven Cabral (W, 8-3) going deep into the game with another six-inning start.
- Northeastern showed its patience in the first inning drawing five walks and scoring four runs on two hits in the opening frame.
- Leadoff man Mike Sirota reached on a walk and was advanced on a Danny Crossen single, and was scored on an Alex Lane single for the 1-0 lead.
- A walk to Cam Maldonado was followed up by a passed ball that allowed Danny Crossen to run in and score from third. Jimmy Sullivan earned another walk to reload the bases, and a walk to Gregory Bozzo scored the third run of the inning in Lane.
- Maldonado would follow in Crossen's footsteps, scoring on a dirt ball read for the fourth run of the inning.
- The Huskies added on two more in the second, starting with the leadoff hitter Tyler MacGregor who hit a solo shot into the right field stands on a 1-1 count to make it 5-0.
- An RBI single from Maldonado with one out would score Alex Lane for the 6-0 lead.
- A two-out single up the middle by Crossen in the third inning scored Sirota from third base for the seven-run league.
- Two more Northeastern runs came across in the fourth inning, on an RBI fielder's choice by Spenser Smith and an RBI single from Sirota.
- The Huskies' defense held Charleston off the scoreboard for the opening five innings, with starting pitcher Aiven Cabral throwing another gem of a start. He went 6.0 innings, allowed five hits and just two unearned runs, and struck out four batters while walking none.
- Charleston's two runs came in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI single to right field with two outs, cutting into the lead.
- The bullpen effort was split between Brett Dunham (1.1, 0H, 0R, 3BB) and Nick Davis (1.2, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 3K) to close out the contest. Davis struck out three batters in the ninth inning to seal the victory.
- The win marks Northeastern's first ever 40-win season, as the single-season program wins record continues to climb past the old mark of 36.
- The Huskies are now 13-1 in series openers – the series opener with the Cougars was NU's first Thursday game of the season.
- Northeastern has won three straight meetings with Charleston, dating back to the 2022 CAA Tournament.
- The Huskies stole seven bases in the contest - it's the fourth game this season where the Huskies have stolen more than five bases in a single game.
