WILMINGTON, N.C. – The No. 25 Northeastern University baseball team (36-8, 17-6 CAA) had its nine-game winning streak snapped by UNCW (26-17, 15-6 CAA), falling by a score of 7-2 on Saturday evening at Brooks Field.
The designated hitter,
Alex Lane (1-for-4, RBI) got things started off with an early lead for Northeastern scoring
Mike Sirota (3-for-4, BB), but the Huskies fell behind in the middle innings and could not rally despite a ninth-inning home run from
Luke Beckstein (2-for-4, HR, RBI).
- The Huskies were able to strike first in game two, tallying a run in the first inning. Leadoff man Mike Sirota worked a five-pitch walk, and he advanced to third on a ground out and an infield error.
- With two outs, Alex Lane hit a line drive over the left side of the infield to score Sirota from third. The Huskies looked to threaten further with the bases loaded, but the Seahawks were able to hold NU to just the one run.
- Northeastern was able to keep UNCW at bay for the opening three innings, even stranding the bases loaded in the second, but the Seahawks broke through in the fourth with a solo home run and an infield hit.
- The Seahawks extended their lead with a three-run blast in the bottom of the fifth to lead 5-1, and a fielding error in the sixth to lead 6-1.
- Starting pitcher Eric Yost was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs, three of them earned, on seven hits in his four innings of work. He struck out three batters in his outing. It was just Yost's first loss of the season.
- After the Seahawks tallied their seventh run, coming on a wild pitch in the seventh, Nick Davis ended the string of four straight scoring innings from the Seahawks. Davis worked the entire eighth, allowing no hits and striking out one batter.
- In the top of the ninth, Luke Beckstein tallied a two-out solo shot over the left field wall to attempt the start of a rally – Mike Sirota followed it up with a single, but the Seahawks were able to quell the trouble.
- Northeastern now falls to 7-6 in games played on Saturdays. Five of those losses have come in CAA play.
- The Huskies in the Seahawks are both riding streaks of CAA series wins – Northeastern has not lost a conference series since March, losing their only CAA series of the year at Elon. UNCW has yet to drop a CAA series this season.
The rubber match will take place on Sunday, May 7
th at 1 p.m. at Brooks Field. The game will stream live on FloBaseball.
