WILMINGTON, N.C. – In a series-deciding Sunday afternoon matchup, No. 25 Northeastern (36-9, 17-7 CAA) fell to UNCW (28-17, 16-6) at Brooks Field by a score of 4-2.
The Huskies held the Seahawks to just four runs despite giving up 11 hits, with the defense stranding eight UNCW runners in the contest. The Huskies, however, stranded eight runners of their own, including two bases loaded scenarios, and were unable to tally more than one run in their rally innings.
- The Seahawks took an early lead with a two-run second inning, scoring on a double play and a blooped infield single.
- The Husky defense settled in and delivered scoreless innings in the third and fourth to keep the game within reach through the middle innings.
- Northeastern looked to tie the game up in the fifth after two straight hits from Harrison Feinberg and Spenser Smith – Feinberg scored on an RBI ground out from Gregory Bozzo, as Mike Sirota and Tyler MacGregor would load the bases with a walk and a hit-by-pitch.
- The Huskies were unable to convert on the bases loaded, two-out situation, and the score remained 2-1.
- The Seahawks answered with a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning, leading 3-1.
- NU starter Wyatt Scotti did his best to keep UNCW at bay, working four innings and allowing just three runs on eight hits. He recorded one strike out in his outing which ended in his second loss of the season.
- Scotti was relieved by Griffin Young who went the distance with his longest outing of the season – he worked four innings allowing just three hits and one unearned run. He struck out two batters as he and the Husky defense kept the game within reach for the offense.
- The Seahawks tallied an unearned run in the sixth on a hit and run through the middle, extending their lead to 4-1.
- The Huskies loaded the bases in the top of the eighth, and were able to score one run a hit-by-pitch to Cam Maldonado, but the Seahawks tallied two strikeouts to end the rally.
- Northeastern had one last chance in the top of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the place twice after a single by Bozzo, but the Seahawks closed out the game with a strike out and a fly out.
- It's just the second time this season Northeastern has dropped two games in a row, and the second time they've dropped a CAA series. Both occurred in March against Elon, with the Huskies dropping that series with a pair of double header losses to end the series.
- The Huskies were held to two runs in back to back games, the lowest two-game combination of runs scored for NU this season.
- Northeastern drops to second place in the CAA conference standings based on winning percentage, with one more win and one more loss than UNCW.
The Huskies continue their road trip this Tuesday with a trip to College Park, Md. to face No. 23 Maryland at 6:30 p.m. They then travel to Williamsburg, Va. to face William & Mary for a three-game CAA weekend set, starting Friday, May 12
th at 6 p.m.
