WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – In the opening game of the Winston-Salem Regional, the Northeastern Huskies (44-15) fell to the No. 19 Maryland Terrapins (42-19) by a score of 7-2 on Friday afternoon at David F. Couch Ballpark.
The Huskies were even in hits with the Terps, but stranded nine runners in the contest to fall by a five-run margin, with four of those runs coming in the sixth inning or later.
- The Terps got on the board early with a two-out solo shot over the left center field wall to lead 1-0.
- Maryland tallied another solo shot in the bottom of the second to lead 2-0 after two.
- The Husky bats answered back in the second with a two-out rally starting with a double from Spenser Smith, and an RBI single by Tyler MacGregor to score Smith, cutting the deficit to one.
- Another two-out rally in the fourth saw a walk to Harrison Feinberg, and singles from Luke Beckstein and Gregory Bozzo got the tying run across.
- Maryland retook the lead with a leadoff triple and a sac-fly in the bottom of the fourth.
- Starting pitcher Wyatt Scotti left the game after five full innings pitched – he allowed the three runs on just three hits, walked one, and struck out three.
- A trio of hits to begin the sixth gave Maryland some insurance as the third hit was an RBI single to make it 4-2. A sac-fly scored another for the 5-2 lead.
- A blooped single to right field and a wild pitch scored the sixth and seventh runs of the game for Maryland to lead 7-2 going into the ninth.
- A leadoff walk to Gregory Bozzo was not enough in the top of the ninth as a strike out and two fly outs sent Northeastern to the elimination bracket.
- The Huskies were held to two runs for just the seventh time this season. Northeastern's Friday record falls to 15-2.
- The active on-base streak of Danny Crossen was extended to 59 games dating back to the 2022 season, as the third baseman went 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
The Huskies face the loser of Friday night's matchup between No. 1 Wake Forest and George Mason, which takes place at 6 p.m. The Saturday elimination game for NU is scheduled for 12 p.m. on ESPN+.
