STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Paced by double-digit performances from
Defne Arliel and
Anabel Zier, the Northeastern volleyball team (5-4, 1-0 CAA) picked up its first CAA win of the season with a four-set victory over Stony Brook (4-7, 0-1 CAA) on Saturday afternoon.
Arliel led the Huskies with a team-high 11 kills, and Zier notched 10 kills on .304 hitting.
Jessica Frannea also had a strong day for Northeastern with 36 assists and eight digs.
- Set One: The Huskies got off to a 10-8 lead after a kill from Marika Virthe. Northeastern then extended its lead a few points later at 16-12 after a kill from Kaylin Daniels. Stony Brook chipped away at the deficit down the stretch with three straight points to make it 20-19, and then knotted the frame up at 21. The teams went back and forth until back-to-back kills from Frannea and Virthe sealed the set win (25-23). Northeastern outhit Stony Brook .303 to .174 in the frame.
- Set Two: Stony Brook got off to a 10-7 lead, but the Huskies knotted up the stanza right away capped off with an error by the hosts and a kill from Abby Reck. Back-to-back aces from Pono Gacutan helped the Huskies pull ahead at 19-16, but the Seawolves continued to fight back. With Northeastern up 24-21, Stony Brook tallied three straight points to tie the score up at 24. Arliel and Julianna Truscott then tallied back-to-back kills to give the Huskies the tight set win at 26-24.
- Set Three: Stony Brook stormed out to a 10-3 lead and didn't look back in the frame. The Huskies trimmed the deficit to 17-15, but the Seawolves closed the frame on an 8-2 run to take the set 25-17.
- Set Four: The teams traded points, with neither leading by more than one to start the frame. Tied at 11, Northeastern went on a 3-0 run, highlighted once again by back-to-back aces from Gacutan to lead 14-11. The Huskies extended their advantage to 19-14, and then ultimately closed the match on a 6-1 run to secure the set victory at 25-15.
- Gacutan tallied a team-high 16 digs, six assists, and tied a career-high with five aces.
- Zier also had a team-high five blocks.
- Reck notched nine kills and 11 digs.
- Virthe chipped in with eight kills and two blocks.
- The match featured 26 ties, and 12 lead changes.
The two teams will face each other again on Sunday, September 17. First serve is slated for 1 p.m., and will stream on FloVolleyball.
