STONY BROOK, N.Y. – Paced by 15 blocks from
Nyla Shepherd, and 11 kills from
Abby Reck, the Northeastern volleyball team (6-4, 2-0 CAA), completed the weekend sweep over Stony Brook (4-8, 0-2 CAA) with a reverse sweep on Sunday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium.
Shepherd's 15 blocks were a career-high, and tied a program record for the most in a single match. The graduate student led a Northeastern defense that outblocked the Seawolves 20 to eight. Reck also tallied 11 digs, notching her second collegiate double-double.
- Set One: Stony Brook got off to an 8-3 lead, but the Huskies chipped away at the deficit. A kill from Reck and an error by the hosts made it 11-9, and Northeastern eventually tied the frame up at 13 with three straight points. Stony Brook went on an 8-0 run to pull ahead, and ultimately took the set 25-18.
- Set Two: Both teams traded points, with neither leading by more than two at the start. The Seawolves led 9-7, but a kill from Reck and blocks from Marika Virthe and Shepherd tied the frame up. Down the stretch, the Huskies tallied four straight points to lead 19-17, but Stony Brook continued to fight back. With Northeastern up 23-20, the Seawolves tallied three straight points to knot the score up and took at tight set win at 26-24.
- Set Three: The Huskies got off to a 12-7 lead, highlighted by a kill from Shepherd and an ace from Anabel Zier. Stony Brook chipped away at the deficit though, knotting the frame up at 17. Back-to-back blocks gave Northeastern a 20-18 advantage, and the Huskies held on to take the set 25-23. The Huskies were strong on defense in the frame with six team blocks.
- Set Four: Huskies got off to an early 3-0 lead, and then extended their advantage to 9-4 after three straight aces by Tessa Onaga. Back-to-back kills by Reck made it 15-9, but the Seawolves tallied five of the next six points to trim the deficit to 16-14. The Huskies regained the momentum though and won the set after an error by Stony Brook (25-21).
- Set Five: The teams went back and forth, with neither leading by more than one to start the frame. The Huskies pulled ahead at 7-5 after an error and a kill by Zier, and remained in front. Three straight points by Northeastern capped off by an ace from Jessica Frannea extended the advantage to 13-8, and then back-to-back errors by Stony Brook ultimately sealed the set and match win at 15-10.
- Zier, Defne Arliel, and Shepherd all tallied nine kills. Zier also was strong on defense with five blocks.
- Virthe chipped in with five kills and eight blocks.
- Frannea dished out a team-high 38 assists and 16 digs, her third double-double of the season.
- Onaga tallied 13 digs and a team-high four aces.
- Pono Gacutan tied a team-high with 16 digs.
The Huskies will host Hofstra the weekend of September 23-24. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. on both days and will stream on FloVolleyball.
