ELON, N.C. – Paced by a 17-kill performance from
Abby Reck, the Northeastern volleyball team (8-5, 4-1 CAA), defeated Elon (3-11, 0-5 CAA) in five sets on Saturday evening at the Schar Center.
The Huskies also had double-digit performances from
Julianna Truscott and
Anabel Zier. Truscott tallied her second double-double of the season with 13 kills and 14 digs, and Zier notched 10 kills on .333 hitting.
- Set 1: The Huskies got off to a 4-2 lead after an ace from Zier. Both teams traded points, until Elon pulled in front up 12-10. After the Huskies knotted the frame up at 12, Elon tallied four of the next six points to extend its lead to 16-14. A kill by Zier trimmed the deficit to 19-18, and the Huskies continued to fight back. A kill by Truscott and an ace by Reck tied the frame up at 23, and Northeastern kept the momentum to take the set at 25-23. Elon had six service errors in the frame compared to Northeastern's two.
- Set 2: Elon got off to an early 7-2 lead, but Northeastern fought back to trim the deficit to 7-5 after back-to-back aces by Reck. Elon continued to remain in front, extending its lead to 11-7. The Phoenix hit .400 in the frame and took the set at 25-15.
- Set 3: The Phoenix tallied an early 4-2 advantage, but the Huskies fought back to knot the set up at six. The teams traded points, with neither leading by more than one until the halfway point. Elon went on a 5-0 run to go up 15-11, but the Huskies tallied five of the next six points to knot the frame up at 16. A kill by Zier put Northeastern in front at 17-16, but the Phoenix went on a 6-0 run to pull ahead at 22-17. Elon took the set, 25-21.
- Set 4: The Huskies stormed out to a 4-0 lead, highlighted by two aces from Jessica Frannea. Northeastern continued to hold onto the momentum, extending its advantage to 8-1 after blocks from Nyla Shepherd and Marika Virthe. Midway through the frame the Huskies tallied a 17-7 advantage, and didn't look back, taking the set at 25-19.
- Set 5: Elon got off to a 4-1 lead, but the Huskies tallied three straight points to knot the frame up. Tied at seven, Northeastern went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by blocks from Reck and Zier to lead 10-7. Elon trimmed the deficit a few points later at 11-10, but back-to-back errors by the Phoenix extended the advantage to 13-10. Northeastern held on to take the set 15-11.
- Maddie Donaphon tallied a team-high 16 digs.
- Shepherd had a team-high eight blocks.
- Inbal Peleg dished out 23 assists, and Frannea tallied 21.
- The match featured 22 ties, and 12 lead changes.
The two teams will face each other again on Sunday, October 1. First serve is slated for 3 p.m., and will stream on FloVolleyball.
