Batts’ Big Day Lifts NU Past UNCW, 79-49

WILMINGTON, N.C. – Jaelyn Batts scored a career-high and game-high 17 points as the Northeastern women's basketball team (5-8, 1-2 CAA) got back to its winning ways with a big 79-49 victory over the UNCW Seahawks (2-12, 0-3 CAA) on Friday afternoon at Trask Coliseum.
 
Batts had a stellar night, tallying 10 of her 17 points in the second half, and finished 8-of-11 with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The Huskies also had double-digit performances from Deja Bristol (15 points), Derin Erdogan (12 points, nine assists, eight rebounds), and Oralye Kiefer (career-high 12 points).
 
As a team, Northeastern shot 56.9% overall (37-of-65) and dominated UNCW in every statistical category including paint points (56-16), points off turnovers (24-14), second-chance points (18-7), and fast break points (17-5).
 
The Seahawks shot 34.0% overall in the contest and were led by Evan Miller with 14 points.
 
The Huskies came out firing in the first, making six of their first eight field goals, ballooning their lead to 14-4 at the 5:54 mark. The NU offense continued to roll in the frame, with Kiefer knocking down a jumper a minute later to extend the advantage to 18-4. UNCW fought down the stretch, but Northeastern shot 52.6% overall in the stanza to take a 22-14 lead into the second.
 
The Seahawks got off to a quick start in the second, making their first two baskets of the frame to trim the deficit to 22-18. Batts ended the run with a steal and layup, but UNCW responded right back. Northeastern's offense took over once again though, with a 6-0 run, highlighted by two layups from Kiefer. The Huskies continued to push the pace, ballooning the advantage back up to double-digits at 35-25 after Maddie Vizza's second three of the contest and a layup by Yirsy Queliz. NU shot 61.5% overall, and took a 40-29 lead into halftime.
 
Bristol got the Huskies going in the third, extending the advantage to 42-31 at the 7:57 mark with a layup. Batts though, shined in the frame for NU, making her first three field goals to propel the Huskies to an 8-0 run, and a 50-33 lead. Northeastern's defense stood tall in the stanza, holding UNCW to 33.3% shooting (3-of-9) to lead 52-37 going into the fourth.
 
Northeastern's offense continued to be strong in the fourth, notching eight straight points, capped off by back-to-back layups by Bristol to lead 60-37. NU didn't look back, closing the stanza on a 10-0 run, highlighted by an and-one play by Sophia Carlisle, her first collegiate points to seal the win.
 
The Huskies will return home to host Hofstra on Sunday, January 14. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m on NESN/FloHoops.
