THREE THINGS TO KNOW:
- BEANS, BEANS AND MORE BEANS: Northeastern will take on Harvard in the semifinals of the 45th annual Women's Beanpot. The Huskies have won 18 Beanpot titles, which leads all schools, and are the reigning champions. For the first time in Women's Beanpot history, the championship round will be played at TD Garden on January 23. Goaltender Gwyneth Philips returns for the Huskies after winning the Bertagna Award as the Beanpot's top goaltender in 2023.
- SEEING CRIMSON(?): Northeastern and Harvard are set to meet for the first time since 2020, when the Huskies won 3-1 in the Beanpot semifinals. The Huskies have not played in the Bright-Landry Hockey Center since the 2015-16 season, where NU lost, 3-0. Harvard enters this matchup riding a two-game losing streak, most recently dropping to Princeton, 4-1. The Crimson are 3-7-0 in the Bright-Landry this season. Gwyn Lapp leads the Crimson with 11 points off of eight goals and three assists. Alex Pellicci has started all 18 games for Harvard and owns a 3.70 GAA and .891 save percentage.
- BEANPOT HALL OF FAME: Northeastern women's hockey legend and Team USA Olympian Shelley Looney '95 is set to be inducted into the Women's Beanpot Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place before the Dunkin' Women's Beanpot Championship game on January 23 at TD Garden. Looney joins, Taylor Wasylk (BC), Corinne Schroeder (BU) and Sandra Whyte-Sweeney (Harvard) in the Hall of Fame Class of 2024. The Brownstone Township, Michigan native was also named to the 40th Anniversary All-Women's Beanpot Team in 2018 and was inducted into the Northeastern Hall of Fame in 1999. Looney was named the 1994 Women's Beanpot MVP after scoring a goal and adding two assists in the final to eclipse Harvard, 6-2, and win the first Women's Beanpot for the Huskies since 1991.
Northeastern will next take on New Hampshire for its first home game of 2024 in Matthews Arena on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m.
