ELON, N.C. – A career-high 22 points from
Rashad King led four players in double figures for the Northeastern men's basketball team (8-11, 3-3), which jumped out to a big first half lead to knock off Elon (8-11, 1-4) on Saturday night at the Schar Center, 84-72.
Â
The win is Northeastern's third in the last four games and makes
Bill Coen the winningest coach in CAA history with 184 regular season and conference tournament victories, passing George Mason's Jim Larranaga.
Â
The Huskies led from wire to wire and cracked the 80-point plateau for the fourth time this season, shooting 52% as a team led by King's 7-of-10 night. He was joined in double figures by
Harold Woods (20 points, six rebounds),
Masai Troutman (17 points on 6-of8 FG) and 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists from
Chris Doherty.
Â
Elon, meanwhile, was led by 20 points from Max Mackinnon on 8-of-14 from the floor as the Phoenix shot 52% as a team and 11-of-26 from deep.
Â
Northeastern came out hard from the opening tip, controlling both ends of the floor and building up a 21-point advantage to lead 46-25 at the break, its most points at halftime this season.
Â
The Huskies shot 48% as a team and went 5-of-11 from three, led by 14 points from Troutman along with 12 from Woods, who scored NU's final six points of the half just as Elon was starting to chip into the lead.
Â
It was the 17-3 run over less than five minutes, capped by a triple from
Jared Turner, that put the Huskies in the driver's seat, holding the Phoenix to 1-of-3 in that span and forcing Elon into five of its 13 first half turnovers.
Â
The Phoenix tried to put a dent into the deficit coming out of the break, hitting six of their first nine shots to make it a 14-point game five minutes into the second half.
Â
After an 8-0 Northeastern run put the visitors back up by 20 with 11:34 left, a 15-4 Phoenix run put the lead back into single digits with 3:29 to go.
Â
That's as close as Elon would get, though, as the Huskies hit their free throws down the stretch to ice it.
Â
The Huskies will return home for two games next week, beginning on Thursday against UNCW. Tip-off from Matthews Arena is set for 7 p.m. on NESN+ and FloHoops.
