BOSTON — The Northeastern men's basketball team (8-12, 3-4 CAA) could not climb out of an early hole as it fell 77-54 to the UNCW Seahawks (14-5, 5-2 CAA) in Historic Matthews Arena Thursday night.
Prior to the game, Northeastern legend and head coach
Bill Coen was recognized for his 184th CAA regular season or tournament win at Elon last Saturday, which made him the winningest coach in CAA.
Sophomore
Jared Turner and classmate
Masai Troutman led the Huskies with nine points each, and graduate student
Bryce Johnson grabbed six rebounds.
The Huskies kept up with the UNCW offense for the first eight minutes, but a 12-0 UNCW run opened the contest up for the Seahawks, who outscored Northeastern 25-11 over the final 12 minutes of the first half and took a 38-21 lead into the break.
Doherty was the leader for the Huskies in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down a few shots around the paint and draining the team's first three-pointer of the game to score seven first-half points.
The deficit grew after halftime despite Turner and classmate
Rashad King combining for 17 second-half points, and the Seahawks were able to ride out their fourth-straight win over the Huskies and tie the all-time series at 17-17.
Next, the Huskies will stay at home with a quick turnaround, hosting William & Mary Saturday, Jan. 27 at 12 p.m. That matchup will be streaming on FloHoops and live on NESN+.
