BOSTON — After the Northeastern men's basketball team (8-13, 3-5) battled back from a 10-point second half deficit to tie the game at 68 with 29 seconds left, William & Mary (8-13, 3-5) responded with a quick bucket at the other end with 19 seconds to go to top the Huskies on Saturday afternoon at Matthews Arena, 72-68.
Graduate student
Chris Doherty had a career day, posting 27 points and grabbing 13 boards on 50% shooting for his sixth double-double of the season to lead at Northeastern team that finished 24-of-61 overall. He also went 9-10 from the line.
The lion's share of the lead belonged to the Tribe, but Northeastern held tough in the first half and used a 7-0 run over the last 2:13 of the first to go into the break down 34-32. Doherty's 10 first-half points led all scorers.
In the second, the Huskies kept chipping away every time William & Mary would make a run, with the largest lead of the half being 10 points for the Tribe. Then, with under 10 to play, NU attacked the paint and Doherty went to work, scoring 13 of the Huskies' final 21 points.
With 31 seconds on the clock and NU down by three, the Tribe's Gabe Dorsey stepped out of bounds after pressure from the Huskies off the inbounds pass. Sophomore
Rashad King — who finished with six assists — inbounded the ball to a wide-open
Jared Turner. Turner sunk a triple and the crowd of 1101 erupted at Matthews Arena.
However, the Tribe pulled away with a made layup and two free throws to ice the game. Trey Moss led William and Mary with 16 points as one of five players in double figures for the visitors.
Besides Doherty, Turner and sophomore
Harold Woods both finished with double-digit points, as Turner knocked down three triples and had 11 points, while Woods scored 13 on 50% shooting. King scored only four points, but grabbed six boards to go along with his six assists, playing all but 28 seconds in this contest.
Next up, Northeastern hits the road for a three game roadstand, beginning at Towson Thursday, Feb. 1. That matchup will stream live on FloHoops.
