TOWSON, Md. – Towson (14-8, 7-2) used a 24-3 second half run and held off a late charge from the Northeastern men's basketball team (8-14, 3-6) to knock off the Huskies on Thursday night at TU Arena, 83-76.
Â
Harold Woods (25 points) and Dylan Williamson (26 points) went toe-to-toe all game, with Woods finishing his career night 10-of-15 from the floor along with five rebounds to lead three Huskies in double figures. He was joined by
Chris Doherty (17 points, 11 rebounds, four assists), who recorded his seventh double-double of the year and third in the last four games, while
Masai Troutman added 11 points.
Â
NU was 26-of-57 overall on the evening and 8-of-21 from three, its most triples in the last seven games. The Huskies also went 16-of-19 from the line, including 15-of-17 in the second half to stay in the game.
Â
Towson, meanwhile, shot 43% on the night and 9-of-19 from long range along with a 26-of-29 showing from the stripe.
Â
Northeastern got off to a hot start, hitting three of its first four shots, including back-to-back threes from
Rashad King (seven points) and Doherty to open the scoring and force a Towson timeout just 1:09 into the game.
Â
The Huskies would shoot 52% as a team and 46% from three (6-of-13) and used a 14-1 run over less than four minutes to lead by as many as 15 before the Tigers trimmed the deficit to seven at the break, 39-32.
Â
Towson shot 33% in the opening half, led by eight points from Christian May, and had 10 assists on 10 made field goals in the first.
Â
Woods got off to a fast start to the second half, scoring Northeastern's first six points to give the visitors a nine-point edge, 45-36, early on. But a 24-3 Towson run from there quickly erased the gap and gave the Tigers a 62-49 lead with 8:33 left, forcing NU into six turnovers along the way.
Â
The Huskies, who were held without a field goal for more than 10 minutes in the half, stayed in the game with its second half free throw shooting and got hot when it mattered (6-of-9 over 6:34) to cut it to as little as four with a minute left, but late free throws from Charles Thompson (16 points, seven rebounds) would seal it for the Tigers.
Â
The Huskies will be back in action on Saturday night when Northeastern travels to Stony Brook for a 6:30 p.m. tip at Island Federal Arena.
