PHILADELPHIA – Derin Erdogan tallied a team-high 27 points, but the Drexel Dragons (7-6, 2-0 CAA) used a big third quarter to take down the Northeastern women's basketball team (4-8, 0-2 CAA) on Sunday afternoon at the Daskalakis Athletic Center.
Erdogan had another stellar day, notching 18 of her points in the second half, and finished 10-of-18 from the field, and 5-of-7 from three. The senior has now reached 20+ points in the past three games.
Deja Bristol also headlined the Huskies with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Drexel shot 43.5% overall in the game, but 53.3% (8-of-15) in the third quarter, outscoring the Huskies 26-15 in the frame. The Dragons had three players in double-digits, with Chloe Hodges leading the way with 21 points and six rebounds.
The Huskies got off to a hot start from beyond the arc, as Erdogan and
Yirsy Quéliz knocked down back-to-back threes to give Northeastern a 6-0 lead. Erdogan continued to shine in the frame, knocking down four straight points to extend the lead to 10-2 at the 5:15 mark. The Huskies continued to roll with a 7-0 run down the stretch and took a 19-9 lead into the second.
Northeastern continued to push the pace in the second, as
Maddie Vizza knocked down a quick three in front of her home crowd to extend the advantage to 22-9. Drexel fought back with a 6-0 run to trim the deficit to 27-19, but Bristol ended the run with a layup. The Dragons made six of their next seven field goals to close the gap to 31-27, but a three by
Oralye Kiefer ended the momentum by the hosts. The Huskies shot 58.3% overall (7-of-12), and 75% (3-of-4) in the frame to take a 38-29 lead into halftime.
The hosts got off to a quick start in the third, with a 4-0 run to trim the deficit to 38-33. Both teams traded baskets throughout the first few minutes of the frame, but NU continued to remain in front. Drexel went on a 6-0 run to make it a one-point game at 42-41, but Erdogan gave the momentum back to the visitors with five straight points. The senior was on fire in the frame with 13 points, but Drexel fought back in the final minutes to give the hosts a 55-53 lead heading into the fourth.
Erdogan continued her torrid play, with five straight points to give NU the lead back at 58-55. Both teams went back and forth for the majority of the frame, with neither leading by more than two. Vizza tallied her second three of the contest to give Northeastern a 65-63 lead with 2:15 to go, but Drexel responded right back. The hosts went on a 4-0 run with less than two minutes to go, and held on for the 67-65 win.
The Huskies will remain on the road to face UNCW on Friday, January 12. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. on FloHoops.
