NEWARK, Del. — The Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (9-6, 3-1 CAA) used the momentum from its winning streak to earn a 2-1 victory on the road against the Delaware Blue Hens (6-8, 3-2 CAA) on Friday evening.
- The Huskies opened the scoring on a Blue Hen turnover in their half. Senior Lara Taylor retrieved the ball and drove down the byline before squaring a pass across the penalty spot, where junior Emilia Adragna used the tip of her stick to pass it to freshman Juana Gonzalez-Peyru at the back post, who tapped the ball into the cage to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
- Northeastern doubled its advantage off another Delaware turnover after sophomore Alex Mega took the ball from the defender and carried it into the circle before finishing a shot into the bottom left corner, making it 2-0 after the first.
- After a goalless second quarter, the Blue Hens came out aggressive to start the second half, earning six penalty corners in the first nine minutes. The Huskies defended all very well, preventing any shot from reaching the back of the cage.
- However, Delaware answered on its seventh penalty corner, as a mishit shot trickled its way through the crowd of defenders before finding the net to make it 2-1. The hosts earned three more penalty corners in the third quarter but could not convert on any of the opportunities.
- The fourth quarter was a defensive showcase as the Huskies hunkered down in their half. Despite several chances from Delaware, the hosts could not find the game-tying goal, and Northeastern went on to take a 2-1 victory.
- Friday night's victory is Northeastern's first at Delaware since 2012 and their sixth of the winning streak dating back to Sep. 29 this season.
- Gonzalez-Peyru recorded her first collegiate goal and is the first freshman on the team to score a goal this season.
- Senior Kristi Merashoff recorded seven saves on the night.
Northeastern returns home to face off against the Maine Black Bears (9-6, 3-1 AE) for Senior Day on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 12 p.m. The contest will be available to stream on NESN and FloLive.
