DEDHAM, Mass. — Two corner and open play goals proved to be the difference, as the Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (10-6, 3-1 CAA) recorded their seventh straight win, taking a 4-2 victory against the Maine Black Bears (9-7, 3-1 AE) on Senior Day Sunday afternoon.
- Maine opened the scoring after a saved shot from senior Kristi Merashoff found the stick of a Black Bear forward, who tapped the ball into the cage for a 1-0 lead.
- However, the Huskies responded less than a minute later on a penalty corner, when graduate student captain Lauren Rowe rifled a shot inside the five-meter circle, sending it into the upper netting to level the score heading into the second quarter.
- With less than three minutes until half, Northeastern grabbed its second goal on a counterattack. Graduate student Mak Graves received the ball at midfield and ran through the Maine defense before finding sophomore Alex Mega alone in the circle. The forward created space away from the goalkeeper and slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of the cage to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead going into halftime.
- Midway through the third, the Norwich, England tandem of senior Lara Taylor and Rowe connect once again on a penalty corner, as Rowe's shot deflected off the frame of Taylor's stick to fly past the goalkeeper and give the Huskies a 3-1 advantage.
- Mega added a second goal on the afternoon after her shot from the right byline took a deflection off the goalkeeper's pads, trickling into the net to make it 4-1 less than a minute into the fourth quarter.
- Despite Maine grabbing a second goal with seven minutes remaining, Northeastern maintained possession and earned a 4-2 victory on Senior Day.
- Mega led all Huskies on the afternoon with four points, followed by Rowe with three, Taylor with two, and three others with at least one point. This is Mega's first multi-goal performance since the team's 6-2 victory over Hofstra last season.
- Merashoff added six saves on the afternoon, while freshman Laine Cabell appeared in the fourth quarter and recorded two saves.
- Sunday's win made Northeastern's tenth of the season, the first time the team has reached that mark since 2019.
