DEDHAM, Mass. — With a chance to clinch a spot in the CAA Field Hockey Championships, the Northeastern Huskies field hockey team (11-6, 4-1 CAA) came through in their final regular season home game, taking a 3-1 victory over the Monmouth Hawks (9-6, 2-3 CAA) Friday afternoon for its DEI game.
- A scoreless first quarter carried midway through the second before graduate student captain Lauren Rowe collected the opening goal on a penalty corner. A linkup between graduate student captain Caroline Sweeney and senior Maria Armaganian allowed Rowe to rifle a shot from the top of the circle and past the Monmouth goalkeeper to put the Huskies up 1-0.
- However, the visitors responded with 30 seconds to go in the first half. They used a solo run from their midfielder to enter the Husky circle and send one into the back of the cage, leveling the score entering halftime.
- After multiple scoring opportunities from both sides, Northeastern reclaimed its lead with a goal from freshman Juana Gonzalez-Peyru. After a long pass from Rowe found its way into the Monmouth circle and to the stick of freshman Olivia Yelen, the midfielder attempted a shot that deflected off an opponent's stick and landed in front of the Gonzalez-Peyru. She proceeded to send the shot into the bottom right of the net to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead going into the final 15 minutes of play.
- After back-and-forth action through the final quarter, Northeastern took advantage of its final penalty corner of the game when Rowe's deflected shot soared above the Hawk defense and to Sweeney on the left side of the net. She then perfectly timed a shot while the ball was still falling, hitting it into the back netting to extend the lead with just under five minutes to go.
- Despite several threats from the Monmouth offense, the Huskies held their own defensively, seeing out the remaining time to take a 3-1 win and secure a place in the CAA Field Hockey Championships.
- Friday's berth is the sixth in the last seven years for Northeastern, and the first time they have earned four conference wins since 2018.
- The Huskies also extended its winning streak to eight games with Friday's victory.
- Sweeney led all players with three points, Rowe and Gonzalez-Peyru with two each, and Armaganian with one.
- Senior Kristi Merashoff recorded five saves on the night.
Northeastern concludes its 2024 regular season campaign with a trip to Long Island to take on the Hofstra Pride (4-12, 2-3 CAA) on Friday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. The contest will be streamed on FloLive.
